Ive got an 88gt with a plastic inner rack bushing. its been making noise for a while but i couldnt find it at first, now its deffinatly the inner rack bushing on the passenger side since you can wiggle the worm gear(pinion?) and duplicate the noise. it doesnt have very much play and isnt affecting steering, yet. i dont really have the time to mess around with it for now but if im facing impeding doom i guess ill have to make the time. it sounds almost exactly like bad sway bar bushigns on a volvo or bmw which a few people here know sounds really bad but isnt.

anyways thanks ahead of time.

Been driving mine like that for 50k miles. It wanders a bit because the toe is off and rattles over bumps but other than that I'm not worried about it.

yes, it is not a bad job - but very often - you will break the bolts which hold the rack it. so - be prepared to drill & tap them. and, the pinion seal is not very easy to remove without puncturing - and replacements are not not available - so you will be RTV'ing that shut. the pinion preload is also often stuck - and a special tool - which Rodney sells really helps here.

i got the part, just not the time. hence my wondering if i really need to do it right meow. i was kinda hoping id just pull the tie rod off that side and pull the bushing out and install the new one. ill probably tighten down the adjuster too.

im not too worried about the rack bolts breaking, the rack has the least corrosion/rust than any other part of the car somehow. if they do ill just cuss alot. nothin a hadfull of zip ties couldnt fix right?
