For those of you that have done the 3400 swap lets see your exhausts. I searched but only found very few pics and since im using the later style manifolds on my 3.1l the exahust will be setup the same.

Here's a pic of my temporary N/A exhaust next to my turbo feed pipe & turbo. I just used a cheap muffler w/ single outlet. I will try and get some installed pics tommorrow.

And how my turbo will sit when I'm done. I will then run the down pipe off the turbo to a Y-pipe with dual tips. Just pipe, no mufflers. haha!

Watch out L67!

And it will be very loud contrary to the popular belief that the turbo will muffle the exhaust, it will not, at least not enough to keep it civil at all times. I've lost count of the number of turbo setups I've put in a Fiero, but I know which ones were the loudest and they all didn't have mufflers for a short while, and two turbos without mufflers are twice as loud it seems. The turbo sounds good whistling through the pipes un impeded, but when you get on it everyone in the vicinity and a good distance away will know. The diameter pipe you use has an effect on it also.

I may end up using some bullet style race mufflers. The old setup I had on the 2.8 was unmuffled. It was very tame, but did have a cat preturbo. I don't know, it all boils down to how cheap I can find some mufflers. I may even just use a 80series f-body flowmaster. I don't know just yet...

DH: I know you're not scared. I wouldnt even try to win against a modded L67, especially one with a turbo. I do however believe that with boost and this mostly stock 3100, a stock or slightly modded L67 will not stand a chance. These engines easily put down 300whp @10psi w/ a manual transmission.

Yes they will, here is the latest accomplishment of one of several aluminum head 60 degree engines deep into the 12 sec quarter mile range or very close.

Why not just use the whole gen3 engine? It's the same amount of work as a gen2 3.1L. If you already have the 3.1 just use if for now. Then save up and buy a low milage 3400. Drop it in and change a few coolant lines and you're done.

If have a 2nd gen that supposedly has 0 miles and looks it. Im going to stick with that for a while because itll have around 150hp 180 or so tq. Thats not to bad with just the crank pulley and if the exhaust being more open gives it any gains. Id like to get 200+ out of it at some point though. With the hybrid it will be like 195 hp and tq. i think the numbers are.

Unfortunately, It seems like most exhausts for the 3x00 engines require lower trunk removal. My turbo setup required most of the removal, so I built an x-frame as well.

As far as the car being loud with no muffler. My exhaust tone isn't very loud with custom headers, 60-1, 3.5" dp into 2.5 dual tips. Made a little "muffler" box with some packing in it, but the loudest part is the whistle...

A good way to do it is to use small resonators, one on each sdie after they split. That takes the rap out of it. Believe me, without something other than the turbo it will be annoyingly loud, not to mention illegal.
Magnaflow makes some nice small mufflers that sound nice.

Bridgetown if i did an exhaust like yours but came over the top with a tight 180 and had no cat with another 90 to the flange i wouldnt think id have to cut the trunk if the bends will work like that?

Here is mine: Fairly simple/cheap to make. 2 2.25 mandrel bent U bends, a high flow cat from ebay, and a camaro stock replacement muffler

I got the flange from an original exhaust. It is the piece that was originally on the motor, I have heard that autozone carries a similar one, but I have never seen it. I would try junkyard / a user on the forum.

I have also only seen the 3 bolt style flange at autozone but im going to try and find one off a stock exhaust so i can use part of the down pipe to. J/w though did you have to cut/dent the trunk?

My trunk is cut out flat. The way I mounted my swap, I just about had to do it. The turn coming out of the manifold would have been so sharp, it would have been really choking the exhaust. I don't see why you shouldn't cut the trunk. It is a simple mod, and just lay down some metal to cover the hole + carpet and it looks good. You should really consider cutting it out, it makes fabbing an exhaust a ton easier, as you can actually see what you are looking at.

I no it would make it easier to do but i like the trunk and want to be able to keep most of the little storage the car has in the first place. Im thinking i might just remove the heat shield and bend it in a little if i have to. IIRC removing the heat shield and tabs for the screws will give you another couple inches or something like that.
