Most of my exhaust pipe is fine as it new and galvanized but the welds are various joints are rusting nicely.
What can I use to paint the welds with to help protect them? Not really looking to paint the whole system, just the welds.

Wire brush the rusting areas clean -- use any hi-temp engine paint to seal ---- remember -- your only resealing the out side - but it's mostly surface rust anyway.

If you can clean them off really well, I painted my complete exhaust system with the 1500* spray (believe it's dupli-color) that I picked up at Oreilly's. It's held up really well other then where I missed preping the pipe well.
I had sand blasted the exhaust logs and it has held on them really well.
These now have 10K on them. Are not quit this bright anymore but still look good.

The bad news is the welds are rusting in the areas you can not see also ,,a proper job requires removal of manifold,,rust removal ,, then paint..Or if you do not want to remove manifold ,, apply as well as you can some rust remover with a brush ,,clean and paint

If just the exhaust pipes you may be able to do this with out removal

Rust rermovers like naval jelly work well here,, especially in areas that are difficult to reach for a wire brush or wire wheel
Use naval jelly first,,brush it on... wait then clean .... then sand or wire brush as well as you can
On muffler pipes or other parts you do not want to remove ,,when you spray an area you can not see,,mold an old cereal to the shape(round here) and affix it or hold it just above the part being painted ,more paint will get onto the object being painted ,,Tho I prefer to use a brush if at all possible

Go to hardware store and buy a rattle can of cold galvanize. I used it on my exhaust system. It's a nice silver color and stays silver after heating.
