After seeing that my compression is 30-40 on 2 of the back 3 cylinders on my stock v-6, and burning a ton of oil, I have decided on a 3800sc swap. My question is this....What parts will I need and from which vehicle to change my 87GT Getrag 5 speed to 3800sc auto. The parts I am referring to are the shift linkage, cables, axles, etc. I am looking to do a stock 3800sc with virtually no mods at this time. I will probably be looking to get the harness swap from Fieroflyer if he still does it, and the mounts from purplereign if he still does them. The reason I am doing the stick to auto, is reliabilty of the trans and so my wife can drive it sometime. She can't drive a stick. Right now,I want to get all of the smaller and cheaper items out of the way, as x-mas is coming. Then I will look for the engine and trans. Of course the harness will have to wait until I figure what year 3800sc I can get and what pcm, but I thought with someones knowledge, I could at least get the linkage and other small items purchased. Thanks in advance, Rich.

You want the easiest way? Find yourself a '97 GTP that has recently been totalled behind the firewall, and buy the whole car.

I agree!
you are going to need alot of stuff and having a whole car is the way to make sure you have what you need.

Having the entire car is helpfull but compared to buying a wreckers drive train you might save a few dollars but have no warranty.
I have had a few cases where the customer bought an entire car from a private sale and the tranny ended up being bad and had to be replaced, now if it had been purchased through a wreckers they would have replaced the tranny under warranty. Also a smashed up car can not easily be test driven or at least not very safely.
Reusing a stock fuel pump with many miles on it in most cases ends up being a waste of time so the only parts really needed are from the fire wall forward which most wreckers will sell you as a package with a warranty. Just a little some thing to think about when searching for a swap donor drive train. Dan

Do I also need to take the shift mechanisms as well from the donor or do I need to get a fiero select and mate it from there? Thanks for the input by the way.

I am using the shifter from a GTP, Most people use the fiero auto shifter. If you use the GTP shifter plan on alot of cutting to make it fit, the cutting down the shifter height so it doesnt look like a Rat Rod skull shifter because the GTP stock length will be to the top of the stereo console. once you get it fitted it works out good though. Plus you get the performance shift button. I used the cable to, goes foreward off the shifter loops back under the stereo then goes back through the firewall and follows the outside edge of the engine compartment. It was perfect length to make it out of sight.
