I am doing an dash build and have a question. I read somewhere that if you use the off-the-shelf steering wheel adapters for aftermarket steering wheels, that it adds a little length to the steering column, in turn putting the steering wheel closer to the driver. Is this true? It would actually help me if it was. Thanks all

Hey there Freeman,

I have recently installed a Grant steering wheel in my 86 SE and yes, the standard mount kit will place the wheel closer to you. Now having said that, I am a big guy and a closer wheel won't work for me. I did a little digging and found that Grant makes a "billit" mount kit that in my opinion places the wheel at the same location as the stock wheel but the small grant wheel is slightly smaller in diameter and flatter in profile which in turn gives me more room than the stock wheel. The difference for the monut kit is of course cost. I believe the standard kit is like 12 or 13 bucks and the billit is 30 plus. You can also get the billit in either chrome or black. Not sure about other wheel manufacturer's. Good luck!

I have a grant steering wheel as well. now i used the regular grant mount adapter yes it added about 1-2" to the position of the wheel, but I'm a tall guy with the seat all the way back so where it sits now I'm comfortable with it. now if the position bothers you, you can modify the regular mount kit by shorting up the mount stank off, it looks like a ring with three arms that mounts directly to the wheel to the column.

I have a Momo steering wheel with the Momo adapter. The wheel is now about two inches farther back than stock. For me, the wheel is too close.

Grant also makes 1" adapters for some of their steering wheels. The wheels with the 3-bolt pattern can use the 1" thick adapter. My Grant wheel with the 1" adapter is positioned about the same as the stock Fiero wheel.

My only gripe about the Grant wheels is the horn button. Whomever designed it needs a swift kick in the pants.

Thanks all (save 1..),

I'm doing a dash swap and having the wheel 1-2" farther out would be perfect. I appreciate the info

I installed a grant about 7 years ago I used the smaller wheel regretted this decision,, the horn was a p o s as blacktree said it seem like something was missing from the kit.the large horn button flopped around
many G M wheels will adapt easily to a fiero
Black trees wood grant steering wheel looks better than it does in the photo.
also inexpensive leather lace up covers are available in case you do not like the look of what you install.(J c whitney,,ect )
