Bad news. 180K and never a wrench turned on the engine itself. Now blown it seems. Decision time and no decision made as yet. Need good strong '88 4 cyl for replacement or ?

Say it ain't so? Well you got yours money worth out of it and it served you well. There where some Vin R 2.5 rebuilt or new(can't remember) engines on E-bay the other day that where close by and around $400 or so. There is always the option of a little more power and putting in a 3800 N/A or for a little more power a 3800SC. But then again those things always break down.
Looked on E-bay for the motors I saw but looks like the auction has ended for them. If interested I can PM you another E-bay auction of theres and you can E-mail them seeing what they have.

Thanks guys. I WILL be putting in another engine - just don't know what kind as yet ( I actually lean toward another 2.5!). All stand by. I'll need all the help I can get.

If going with another 2.5 then thats easy and simple. Everything will be plug/play and will give you a chance to clean up anything in the engine bay that needs it.

The future of this car is dedicated. As most of you know, I bought it new. It was for my daughter an 18th birthday/college car. When she graduated college, she bought her own car and I "repossessed" it. Now it is promised to her oldest son on his 17th birthday (in six years). So, staying stock is actually a good option. All I really want to do is find a relatively low mileage replacement 2.5 and get it installed and ready for the next 6 years of babying by me.
So, keep me in mind if you find a good deal on a swap-in! Otherwise, I guess I will likely get a factory rebuilt for it and the 50 to 100K warranty that goes with them nowadays.

That OEM surplus place has NEW 2.5L short blocks for $299.00. Do some checking to see if it will fit your application as this is a great price. In the worst case you can always adapt. Get your heads redone, bolt them on, figure new engine mounting points if needed and you might get another 100K out of your Fiero. If you enjoy the four, I'd go Ecotech as that engine is economical and offers great upgrade potentail.

This car is BEAUTIFUL. Make sure your son takes care of it. I got a allegedly running 6cyl 2.8 on Ebay for $260. I'm rebuilding it next year (hopefully!), so I haven't tried it yet, but at that rate you can prob. find a good one on ebay. What about switching to a multi-port duke? I think some other GM's came w/ them, but that's the extent of my knowledge here...
Again, beautiful car.

or go for the LX9 3500. pretty good starting point. for a v6. its newer, its more efficient and you can rock out the mpg's with it. sounds good, and adds a nice oomph to the butt dyno.

I have used Blane's Motor supply on Scyene Rd in Dallas for SBC's with good results each and every time. If you have Adobe on your computer you can download their pricelist. http://www.blainesmotors.com/
