It has the speed controlled volume auto adjustment feature or -- SCV. Corvette has this, and even my Astro van has it. The faster you drive the greater the volume rises automatically as per your setting.
So if I were to get this unit I doubt the auto speed sensitive volume adjust (SCV) will work- no problem. But will the Volume control work at all?
I am curious on how the speed is picked up by the radio, as a secondary element for discussion.. sparx22

Yeah, they work without it. At least everyone that I installed did. They used the VSS signal from the ECM.
What I don't recall is is they use the 4k or 2k signal. If I come across my diagrams I'll look but you should verify. Only 2k VSS is readily available in the Fiero although you can get 4k off the speedo.

TK That helps. Since you have experience with this radio, how does it compare in sound quality against the Pontiac GP radio with the separate 7 equalizer controls? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymot...=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=003

Hmmm, boy..... It sounded like a normal radio. LOL.
I can't say there was any significant difference that stood out. They are both decent for what they are. I might lean towards the GP EQ radio because the speed dependent volume isn't all that important to me. It's cool but not a must have feature in my opinion.
The SCV was in my Olds and the GP EQ was in my Fiero so I can't give any valuable comparison. Neither lend themselves to hi-fi.
Do either have the aux in? That would be of value.

Not sure about aux in sorry. I don't care about speed sensing either, just that those units are less expensive than the Pontiac unit with the 7 eq slides. jim

That is the same Chevy radio I have in my Silverado. Nothing wrong with it....but nothing exciting either. I wouldn't hesitate to pull it out and replace it with a decent aftermarket CD/MP3 player. The Volume will certainly work without the speed hooked up....after all, it gets no signal from VSS while the car is in Park. There is no Aux in on the front, I have never tried to access the aux in on the back, so I don't know how difficult it would be.
These will essentially be the same radio, just that one has an EQ and one has only Bass/Treble. Personally, if I were choosing between them, I would pick whichever would look best in the car.

i havent seen anyone mention this yet, but it is the vss signal that the radio adjusts volume by. and that signal is 4000 ppm. and im not too sure how the stock fiero ecm works since i have the 7730, but you could get whichever wire has the 4000 ppm signal and splice it into the radio harness that accepts that signal. im wanting to do this with my pontiac monsoon, but it has some differences from that and the chevy monsoon. like the pontiac one retains the ability to control a power antenna and the the chevy one does not. the chevy one has the SCV while the pontiac one does not. im thinking it could just be some wires not hooked up, but i dont really even know if it is a main board deal or just the wiring. i need to look more into that from ls1tech.com.
i had that same unit in my 98 blazer lt. never noticed any difference in all the settings for the SCV. it may not have even been working.
as for the aux input, there are some aux input addon devices you can use. the only problem is with the ones i have seen., you hafta have the aux device hooked up. like a cd changer if that radio is compatable with one, and i think it has to have a cd in it too. the aux tape player needs to be hooked up and have a tape in it. i think. there may be one out there that works without the aux device hooked up, but i think that is much more expensive. im still looking for that one. for the aux input, i could be wrong though, but only the 2000+ radios will work.

If it is working correctly, you probably won't notice it....but then when you go to a vehicle that doesn't have it, you certainly notice it missing. About the only time I will notice it in my truck is when I slam on the brakes at highway speeds....then, the sudden drop with a slight delay compared to speed becomes noticable.
