The windows on my 88 kind of make a groaning type sound. This happens when they are up and I grab the glass pushing slightly toward or away from the driver/passenger compartment. I figure they need an overhaul. I have read many posts about windows and mechanisms, but not sure it addresses a complete renewing of the mechanism or directly addressing the issue of this noise.

Anyone know a link on this?

More than likely All it needs is everything LUBED . TRACKS, linkage etc. did that to my 87 & they work like new. I used kroil on them first (penetrating oil) to break up the hardened grease, then lithium grease.

Hi lou,

I thought so too, but I did a bunch of lubing and didn't change. I will still bet you are right. I just did not get in there good enough. Didn't you find it hard to get the cleaners and lube in to those tight areas? What did you use to direct the fluids to the right areas?

I used KROIL, but you Can use PB Blaster, it comes with a red tube on the spray head. it's mostly the front & rear Tracks AND the flat part thet "scissors". it gets gummed up & sticky. the penetrant disolves it.

Update- Now that I have the outer door panel off I can better see the source of the groaning noise. The white plastic bumper on the bottom of the window glass comes up and makes contact with a plastic tipped metal braket at the top of the stroke. This is the source of that noise.

I will get some pics and post. I think the plastic coating of the brake is worn through or something. I will get a better look when it is light out.

I WISH I could get the outer door skins off of mine, the torx holes just strip out & the bolt heads do nothing !

I read lots of posts about that. I slightly tightened them before attempting to loosen. Surprisingly every one came out without a hitch!

I found the culprit. When the windows reach to top of the travel the white convext barrell-shaped knobs attached to the glass contact stops mounted to the door frame. When the convex shape hits these stops the stops actually slide across the convex shape and direct the top of the door glass toward the weatherseal.

Anyway, I just cleans the stops and the knobs. I applied some extra prothane grease to the mating surfaces and the groan is gone!
