So, what are the symptoms of bad/old fuel? If the car started, what would it sound like?

I am having some troubles.

Thanks in advance!

Maybe sound like it has a "miss". Fuel not burning in the cylinders, Rough idle? I helped a guy last weekend pick up a 66 Chevy truck - straight six. The truck has been sitting for 6 years. When it was parked, it had a new fuel pump & dist. The first time we cranked it over, it shot gas out around the fitting on the carb. We fixed that, pured a little fresh gas in the carb just trying to see if it would fire. 2 cranks and it started right up. It ran pretty rough and sounded like it had a bad miss. He drove it to his house about 10 miles away on that crappy gas. We drained the tank and this stuff was dark brown and stunk bad.

And a noticable strong old fuel smell at the gas cap.
Old gas has a very different strong smell.

Thanks for the help.

I have the rough-running going on. I actually have to keep the pedal down or the car will immediately die at idle.

I put in 3 gallons of fresh fuel, but no difference. Then I drained off a gallong and changed the fuel filter - still no change.

The gas I drained does not smell too bad, but it is mixed with that fresh fuel now.

I guess it's time to drain it all out, huh?

Thanks again-

Bad gas could be old gas but it could also be water in the gas. Symptoms would be stalling, rough operation, and hard starting.

Thanks, Dennis. I get the stalling and rough operations, but she starts up every time (so far).

I guess I shouldn't risk filling her all the way up in case it still doesn't work. I think there are only about 8 or 9 gallons in there total.

I'm still hoping for time over the long weekend to figure this one out. I guess I need a few empty gas cans and a place to drain them...

Have you tried a can of dry gas? If it's a water problem it may clear it up enough for you to burn thru the bad tank! You have a CARQUEST store in your area they should have a couple of pro quality brands to chose from.

Seafoam work wonders. Not only does it clean the fuel system it also works as a gas dryer. Thats the first thing I'd try at least. Worth the 6 bucks to find out and you'll have enough left over to de-carbon the engine while your at it. Have fun.
