Ok guys I finally got my Grand Prix CD player installed in my fiero. Looks great but what it's Locked?? Pretty common as we most all know by now. Well after searching on the net for awhile I came across the W-body forum. There I found a way to unlock the radio for free. I have tried it and it works perfect. The instructions start from where the car is on and you see the loc displayed on the radio. So here is what was posted on that forum. Enjoy!

1. Press and hold presets 2 and 3 for about 5 to 10 seconds until you
get 3 digits on your display. This is the first 3 of 6 digits you will
need, so write 'em down.

2. After doing step one and writing down the code, immediately press the
AM/FM button to get the last 3 of the 6 numbers you'll need, and write
'em down. (if you wait too long between steps 1 and 2 and the LOC code
displays again, just start over).

3. Call this number, it's a prerecorded message, so don't worry about
having to talk to anyone...1-800-537-5140. The voice will ask if you're
calling for Chevy, Pontiac, Cadillac, etc... When you here,
press 1, followed by 02107 and hit the # key. He'll ask you
for the 6 digit code that you've written down. Enter that and press the
* key. He will then give you a code, and the option to get additional 4
digit codes, but one should be sufficient.

4. Follow the normal procedure in your owners manual for unlocking the
radio with your new code...press the hour set button on your radio until
you get the first two numbers of the code, then press the minute set
button until you've entered the last two numbers. Immediately press the
AM/FM button once the correct code is entered and the code SEC or
"secured" will be displayed on the display screen. Now, just turn the
radio on, and your ready to roll.

Cool eh, I wasnt to add one thing. The first step when holding 2 & 3 may not work. If not then try 1 & 4.

Those same instructions are in PFF archive and have been working for about 9 years. I unlocked my radio using that code 5 years ago.

Probably no more than one person a month actually unlocks their own radio using that code.

Gotta love eBay where people get rich selling information that is freely available.

How could it quit working? Does it send out a signal?
Also if you disconnect your battery will it need to be unlocked again?
I have an 03 cd player I needed this for, hope it works.

Well if you disconect your battery it may stop working. Also if you are buying a radio to install it will probably be locked. Once you get the code for your radio it never changes so write it down for next time.

Is that going in a Fiero? Most ' 03 and up players won't work in a Fiero. They have a super-duper form of locking that can't be unlocked by the above procedure. They have to be VIN matched to the car they came out of.

Exactly...if you are swapping the entire guts of a late model car into a Fiero (with a BCM), you are okay, but otherwise it's going to be problematic.

When the CAN standard came about around 2004 ; this new system ties in just about everything in the vehicle to the computer. The radio stereo system uses the computer for storing its info into memory and it won't work without the "handshake" that it needs with the matching PCM that has the serial number in it. On one hand this is very good as it really cuts down on theft but on the other its really bad as it eliminates the ability to install a late year stereo from a salvaged vehicle. There is probably a work around that can be used but it would be quite complex and expensive to do.

Kinda related, will this be a direct plug into an 86?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymot...item330261928904&_tr kparms=39%3A1%7C65%3A1%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245
Has the plug changed? Or do I have to do some fancy electrical engineering? Thanks.

No it's a double DIN and it won't work. Quick rule of thumb is that NONE of the double DIN radios will work in a Fiero, unless you have the entire electrical system of a late model car transplanted.

The double DIN radio's out of Vibes will work in a Fiero. They've been modded by GM to work with the Toyota drive train. It does require some surgery to get it to fit though.

DANG! Actually I bought it for my Fiero , and found out here that it wouldn't work, then installed a Sony, but then this thread came about and I thought OH, maybe I can use it in my 97 Sonoma, but alas. So you are saying if I don't have acess to the car this radio/cdplayer came out of I might as well trash it?

Thanks for the update...as most rules of thumb work, there are exceptions. But for the most part, the Delco double DINs are going to be problematic.

The newer (2002 + ) radios are designed to work on a CAN network and communicate with the body control module to confirm the VIN number of the car and insure that the radio is installed in the proper car. If it's designed to work on a CAN network then there is no hack short of installing a CAN network in your Fiero. That is a LOT of effort just to get a radio to work. If it's a CAN radio then you might as well trash it.

I have two CAN-based radios if you want to try. I was going to develop a little circuit to bypass it, but it wasn't worth the time. The radio will work fine in another vehicle (like my ex-Montana), but it locks once the vehicle is started. Didn't work at all in the Fiero.

Live and learn...

I bought this one on Ebay, how can I tell looking at it if it is a 2001, or 2002+ ? I don't know if the seller knew correctly.

How do you tell apart the years? Maybe its a 2000, or an 01 and I could unlock it? How do I tell?

Does it say "theftlock" on it? If it does then you might be able to unlock it. I don't think the CAN radios use theftlock, (they don't need to).
