1985 Pontiac Fiero GT 4 speed manual

1 $700 Engine 2003 from S10 4.3L V6 8K miles (use car-part.com for parts on local salvage yards)
2 $45 Flywheel Fiero 4 cylinder, drilled new hole pattern using S10 flex plate, chevy uses same pitch size on teeth regardless of how many teeth 148 153 or 168 etc
3 $120 Starter PowerMaster 9100
4 $20 Oil filter adapter from 4X4 S10, taped out ½ in NPT
5 $30 ½ npt TransDapt 2’ oil hoses / lines
6 $14 TransDapt remote oil filter mount 1028
7 Made adapter to mount trans to engine using alum plate, I can send a template to you.
8 Engine mounts: SAME OLD FIERO MOUNTS, Front engine mount needed a new hole drilled in a different place.
9 $250 Edelbrock intake manifold 2114
10 $300 Edelbrock carb 1801
11 $100 Distributor w/ vacuum advance from 1987 Chevy Astro 4.3 or C10. I think it was 87 maybe 85 they will be same as long as its vacuum adv. U have to swap module from 5 pin to 4 pin. Or short 2 pins on 5 module I forgot witch, I just switched because I already had 4 pin one. 5 pin module is for knock sensing computer. Use fiero spark plug wires just trim boots shorter.
12 $30 Gas throtle cable bracket from Edelbrock but can easily adapt fiero or S10 one
13 $20 Edelbrock air filter small foam kind
14 $5 EGR breather plug
15 $8 AC idle pulley for S10 6 groove
16 $5 6groove alternator pulley, I used fiero bracket and alternator by redrilling holes wider on the bracket. You can use S10 alt with S10 bracket, make sure wiring matches.
17 $20 6groove belt
18 $30 water hoses, I also used metal pipe from fiero that’s behind the engine.
19 $100 nuts bolts wires tape etc
Total $1700

Some pointers:

REMOVE AC CONDENCER IN FRONT OF RADIATOR will help w/ cooling

Exhaust: Swapped manifold left to right, right to left. I used part of fiero pipe, s10 sokets to connect to manifold, 2 90 elbows, 1 45 elbow, dummy tip on one side of fiero, no mufler only cat, if my wife says its NOT LOUD that means it is really ok. NO NEED FOR MUFFLER.

NO NEED TO MOVE BATTERY NOR CUT BODY.

Items 4 5 n 6 is the only way to go because of resesed oil filter location

You will need to remove trunk lifting rods (I don’t know what to call it)

I’ll post some pics. Now that I’m done with project I’m on Skype and ICQ a lot. I’d rather explain over mic than typing out everything.

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't tallied up the total cost for my 4.3 swap, but it too will be well under 2K. I used an adapter plate and made most everything else and retained the CPI unit, so I expect the total to be between 1 and 1.5K.

Have any pics?

You might have seen it before, but here is my build thread:

Interesting. What PCM did you use?
1) They quit building S10 pickups in 2004...
7) Is this an original design, or is this another knock-off of Archie's work?

As someone will soon say, THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT PICS!

I tallied mine up to close to $6K but what I was planning was completely off the wall.

That is a pretty good upgrade. You have 180-190 hp and 250 ft/lb of torque relatively cheap. Good job!

So how does it run? Should be plenty torquey. I had an automatic 4X4 S10 Blazer that used to get 25 mpg pulling my dolly.
