Just wondering if anyone has tried transplanting a 5-cylinder volvo engine into a Fiero. Apparently it's about 90cm long with the (manual transverse) gearbox in place and about 60cm wide, I'm not sure if it would fit in there?

I haven't seen one yet but if it would fit it would be a very good and reliable powerplant.
As always there will be a lot of research and maybe custom axles and such.
The B5254T4 5 cylinder, 2.5L, turbo has around 300 hp in its original setup. I have a friend pushing 500 hp in a daily driver station wagon.

The toughest part would be getting it through our DMV.

seems the previous owner of sharkmans car (europe's #1 choptop I think) had a T5 engine in before putting a 3.4 in there to avoid the paperwork (and additional mods).

Intel: getting it through SBP should be a breeze. You just need to register it as an "altered vehicle". Of course, that would mean you need to do some work on the brake system as well in addition to the new engine and gearbox. But really, if you want to keep it legal, it's not any harder to get it approved than any other swap (except possibly the duke-to-2.8, but I haven't been able to get any reliable answers on whether or not it would be legal to just swap it in without a brake upgrade)
