i reciently replaced my rear bearings and left rear axle, but the wheel seems to have some play in it, side-to-side, the tierods and balljoing look ok, when i poped the tie-rod off, it seems to be just like it should...
i recall someone saying that a tie-rod will always ahve slight movement in it? if thats so, is there anyway to "stiffen" that a bit?

You should not have any play unless there are worn tierods or bearings in the suspension.

Most likely tie rods or ball joints. Struts can also cause some play, but not near as likely.
Edit: Poly tie rod inners would be a good idea. Ball joints can not show play when jacked up, but have play in the loaded position. Tie rods & ball joints are not that expensive: I would replace both with *quality* (made in USA?) parts.

Not sure what year but I had the same in my 88 after replacing a rear bearing. Beleive it or not the new bearing (Fiero Store.) was bad and had more play than the one I replaced. Had to get a warranty replacement. So don't discard that.

The strut blots have to very tight. I forget what the foot pounds are but it's a lot. Check them.

The inner tierod mounts (in the rear) are rubber. Poly is available.

Ok all mine are '88s except the Indy (I'll have to check it), but I remember the cars that I've parted out the inner tie rods on the rear had rubber bushings similiar to a sway bar end link (rubber on both sides of the cradle mount). At least one of them did ('cause I thought: "I don't care for that design at all".). Of course my memory is not what it used to be... How else would the tie rod pivot?
Paul

Two signs of growing old are short term memory loss, and, wait; let me think... oh yeah short term memory loss.

Rear tie rods are solid-mounted. If they are worn the handling will be dangerous.

Let me qualify my post above. Those aren't the worn out originals I took off my car; those are a set of Rodney Dickman's beefed up rods. They are a little thicker where they mount to the Fiero chassis and have a provision for greasing the pivot that the stockers don't have. And I painted them. It even says 'Rodney' on the rubber boot!

I had a brand new Timken rear wheel bearing fail in 500 miles.. definitely pull off the wheel and rotor and check for play in it.
