This is kind of a follow-up to https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/093208.html, as part of my continuing effort to flail about until I find the source of this problem.

Tonight, I opened up the distributor with the intention of checking the PUC and IM connections and at least testing the PUC per the shop manual. Distro cap's not in terrible shape, but it's not great, and it's getting replaced. Rotor's shot. Going deeper, I discover that my magnetic ring is in fragments. It is now a modern art sculpture occupying a small area of my workbench. And I have a couple of questions.

First, is the star-shaped object mounted on the spindle beneath the rotor supposed to just pry upward and off? It's not willing to move upward with what seems a reasonable effort, but I can't get to the PUC without removing it, and my days of "if it jams, force it, if it breaks, it needed replacing anyway" have faded to "try not to break anything else that's critical in the process."

Second, is there anyone that sells just the blasted magnet ring? Right now, I don't know that I need anything else (I already have a spare PUC on hand). FieroStore's got the shaft with the magnet unit attached, but if I'm going that far, I may as well just pull the distributor and replace it. I just hate to go that far for a $5 magnet.

There is a pin at the bottom of the shaft that you knock out, the top pulls off allowing access to the pick up coil.

I knocked it out with an old drill bit,,,,

See how the distributor comes apart.

I performed a rebuild on my older distributor, lots of pictures here at my photopage, "distributor rebuild". I specifically thought ahead for everyone, I use smugmug for my photos, tons of bandwidth so download reference pictures to your hearts content.

My PFF write up on distributor replacement for my forum friends,,,,

The new style remanufactured distributors have a nice durable design, has been working well for me.

Thanks, Jetman! I was hoping that the solution fell short of pulling the distributor, but better informed than ignorant.

Yep, the distributor shaft and star magnet are an assembly not meant to be disassembled. If you attempt to remove the magnet it destroys the shaft.
