Hey guys and girls. Ok my 86 SE 2.8 auto is still giving me a headache. When I put the car in gear it will stall out unless you keep the rpms up. Originally it wouldn't run unless I held the gas down. I corrected the ignition timing so now it will idle on its own. I only did this via ear and not a timing light as my dads was 45 min away. Now the questions is, is that something that seems to be the ignition timing still just enough off or does that sound more like a timing belt?

Try disconnecting the blue square shaped wire connector on your transmission and see if the problem continues. If the car doesn't stall in gear then you need a new TCC solenoid. Going from memory, the connector is almost directly below the O2 sensor on the transmission.

Edit,,,, You really need to ground the ADL connector and get a real timing light on it. No timing belt, has a timing chain, fairly durable, usually doesn't break but has been known to jump a tooth on high mileage cars.

Based on you discription I don't think it's the TCC but it won't hurt to eliminate it as a possiblility. To me it sounds like you IAC isn't responding to load change or needs cleaning. You do need to get the timing right before you do too much though.

I have not checked the IAC yet. I will look into that as well. I am trying to get my dad down with the timing light this week.

looks like it is covered, but just wanted to add that the 2.8 uses a timing chain (not a belt).
