I need to get a key made for a car I have with a bad door/trunk key. The VIN# dealer option is no longer available. So I need to remove a lock. I popped the trunk after trying several ideas I found in Search using the trunk release. None worked until I removed the cigarette lighter and put 12V on a thin screwdriver in the hot lead and voila it popped right open with a totally dead battery. Now I understand that there are only 4 pins on the trunk latch and six on the doors. So while the engine is now accessible I can’t use the notchback lock to have a key made. Sooo….off to the passenger door. Inner door panel removal was no problem since I’ve already replaced three sets of dew wipes. Next as in that procedure I pulled the vertical window guide, which now made the lock assembly visible and accessible.

It’s fairly apparent what has to be done. The rod is held in place on the arm by a clip that came off easily. The arm is then held on to the lock cylinder by a funny looking little clip. Close examination reveals that you must pry up the center of the three tabs at the top. This drops into a hole and must be raised in order to slide the clip up so the little raised end is now in the open area below it. I tried a dental pick and needle nosed pliers. Much easier said than done and the clip is now off but the loop is broken and needs to be replaced. Someone has to have these.

Now to my question. Although not the best picture, if you look closely you see two slots at 12 and 6 o'clock on the backing plate and tabs that appear to be on the lock cylinder case at 3 and 9 o'clock. The tabs on the lock are like flat C’s. Is it just as simple as making a tool, since I haven’t been able to find one, somewhat like a ball joint fork that spans the cylinder and engages these C’s and then turning and pulling the lock to the inside of the door? Installation then would be the reverse of everything. If so, do I turn CW or CCW? If not, then what do I do? As of now I only have to replace the clip. Any help from anyone who’s done this will be greatly appreciated.

You can just see see in your top picture a little holding clip that the little end is pointing to the camera. Just left of the lock. You just need to pry it to the left and the lock will come out to you threw that hole it is in. About 1 1/2" of the clip is behind that piece of metal, you cant see it at all. I have used a long flat head screw driver, and a nail bar once, and a needle nose Vice Grip to get these clips out. The Vice Grip worked the best for me. I have changed out two before, so I have removed 4 locks, and reinstalled two. The little chrome caps sometimes come off when you take the lock out of the door. Catch the little springs and the lock cap. Real small springs. They are fun to get the clip back in correctly. While you have the lock in your hand you can see how the clip fits the lock to hold it in the proper place. Once I had the lock back in the door I inserted the key and turned it 60 degres or so and had my wife hold on to the key. This frees up both of your hands to insert the clip. A extendable magnet helps a bunce. Note that I have one lock I could not re-ciip square to the lock. I cleaned it with a long Q tip and thinner. I then J B Weld-ed the darned thing in place. It's been there since March last year this way.

Also note that you can remove your outer door skin and access this lock and the Bastard clip. If you do remove the outside skin REPLACE the outside door handles while you are there, and the dew strips are easy then also. Solve all of these little PITA's all at one time.

And get you a large box of Band -Aids before you start
Good luck

Thanks Joe. I just got back from dinner at Sonic and and watching Get Smart at the movies this evening. Funny movie, although I probably won't get lucky and win my old Tiger back from Subway but I'm trying. I had read your post in Search, but wasn't ,and still am not, sure of what you meant by prying the 'clip to the left'. I'll take a look at it in the morning. Maybe looking at again in the daylight I'll see exactly the clip you're talking about. To me it just looks like the lock should turn 90 degrees into those slots and pull out.

Maybe these will give you an idea where the clip is at.

I lost the keys for my 86 and removed the decklid lock and the locksmith made a key from that and it worked fine in the doors.

Nope, you cannot rotate the lock 90 degrees and then pull it out.
sorry...

Thanks Dodgerunner. Your pics make it perfectly clear how it works. The next person who has this problem and uses search will find this thread and won't have to ask again.

I liked "Don't Mess With the Zohan" better. We saw them both in one day. It was to hot to do anything else.

Okay a screwdriver and a plastic hammer and the clip came out and the lock cylinder. Thanks to Dodgerunner for the pics and Joe for the initial help in Search..

The only bad thing about the movie was the Tiger was only on for about a minute and the sound effects sounded like an Alpine 4 cyl and not the 260V8. Anne Hathaway in that dress made up for it though.

Anne Hathaway did a great job in this movie. I locked in with a Red Tiger once in 1966. I didn't even know what it was. Man was I supprised.
