I'm going to try to replace the front and rear transmission mounts on my 85 V6. I found a post about how to remove the front one, but the only thing that was said about the back mount is that its a PIA to replace - lol. Anyone have any tips on how to replace the rear transmission mount? Its like buried in the engine cradle and looks like it'd be hell to take it out and put in a new one properly.
Repair shop wants 250 labor to do this - so some help could save me a bundle.

Is this on a 4 speed stick car? I just did all three mounts on an 86 V6 4 speed. I didn't have any problems. To do the rear tranny mount, you have to get a jack on the trans case as far towards the rear of the car as possible. Then you have to loosen the other mounts up a bit, and jack the back end of the trans up until the mount bracket which bolts to the trans hits the top of the part of the cradle its recessed in. It then takes a bit of patient wiggling, but you can get the old mount out and the new one in.
I'm working on this right now and i can't get the new rear tranny mount in (85 auto v6). old one came out easy since it was in pieces, lol. I took off the bottom nuts on the front tranny mount, took off the dogbone, and loosened the bolts on the passengers side mount. I jacked it up w/ a block of wood on the tranny case, to the outside of the oil pan. I jacked it up as far as i could, since the top of the rear tranny bracket(which connects to the rear tranny mount) is hitting the top of the opening in the engine cradle. I've been trying different ideas for an hour now but i just can't seem to wiggle the rear mount between the tranny and the engine crade. The top bolt on the rear mount just hits the transmission no matter how i try to get it in.
Any ideas guys? It seems like if i could move the engine forward like one-two inches i might be able to get it in, but the crow bar didn't yield any luck.
I had the same problem replacing the rear trans mount a couple years ago. The only way I ended up getting it in was trimming the excess of the studs on the new tranny mount.
Yea i just did that on all 3 studs a half hour ago, still no luck. right now i'm taking off the top bracket on the rear of the tranny hopeing i can get the mount in.

I fought with that stupid rear transmission mount for an hour, it took our shop mechanic at work all of 7 seconds to install it. You slide it into the frame on it''s side then drop the rear bolt, then the front bolt.

Thanks for the tips guys, i got it on w/ no problems after taking the rear tanny bracket off. I ended up fixing a few other odds and ends around the engine while i was at it too. =)

I don't know what the story is but after I went to the trouble to upload the video on youtube, a bunch of idiots posted crude and demeaning comments. The video is to help folks out, it's upsetting that some people can't leave it alone, posting mean comments is beyond immature. Don't understand why it was just my Fiero stuff that got assaulted?
I'll end my hijack of your thread by mentioning that I'll email the video to anyone who needs it.
