Regular pump gas is ~$4/gal. 50/50 water/methanol windshield washer fluid is $1/gal. I know water/methyl alcohol injection systems are usually only used in boosted applications. My thinking is, the oxygen sensor would note a rich condition by the methanol being burned, so would lean the gas mixture to compensate, thus saving $ on gas even if the mileage stays the same or drops a little, depending on how much you can adjust the metering of the injection. Would this work at all?

not unless your running really high compression and can tune timing and air/fuel accordingly. meth/water is only used to cool the burn, reducing power, very little power is gained from actually burning it.

Well the stock compression ratio definitely isn't enough to make it explode on its own, but wouldn't it ignite once the surrounding gasoline did?

Ever added 50% water to your gas? Doesn't work so well.

BUT, that's not to say you can't use it to save gas money. With water injection, you can run lean (with advanced timing due to the slower burn) without worrying about detonation or preignition. I wouldn't run lean on anything other than low load/cruise conditions, but you can definitely save some gas. The down side is that you're going to be putting out more (NOx?) emissions.

Yeah, when has anyone made power from steam? (I know there's a difference between superheated steam and the amount you'd get from this system). I'm not saying it would be as powerful as regular gas, or as efficient. But at current prices, if it's any more than 25% as good as regular gas, it's a cost savings.

a buddy worked for Mr Wang back in the 70's
Wang was the guy who developed the original system used on the P-51

they were useing water injection to run high compression cars on low/no lead gas
and get better milage by leaning out the gas mix too
and selling kits to do exactly what you want to do

this is on cars with carbs so no on the fly mix control
problem was if the water alcohol mix ran dry BOOM went the motor

so yes it can be done
BUT there are risks

------------------
Question wonder and be wierd
are you kind?
