TK I was reading NashvilleFiero's post about valve lashing and saw Your replies. I am putting new lifters in My motor Today(finally) and I plan to follow Your directions on lashing the valves with the intake off and lifters empty of oil. I put it at top dead center for #1 cylinder and cranked nut until pushrod was bottoming lifter and took a measurement from top edge of nut to top of stud. Slowly backed off the nut until the lifter poppet was up against retainer clip and took another measurement, then tightened nut again until lifter poppet was centered based on My measurements. If I understand Your reply to NashvilleFiero correctly since I am doing it with intake off (where I can see the travel of the poppet) and lifters are new and oil free, I can go ahead and just tighten ALL rocker nuts to the same measurement without hand cranking motor to each individual cylinder TDC? If I DID understand You correctly and can do as I just described, and usually when done lashing all the nuts should be approximately same depth on stud....why can't it be done this way always? whether oil has been in lifters or not?? Once You have #1 cylinder valves adjusted with #1 at TDC...couldn't all rocker nuts just be set the same as in the end they should all be set the same or close to it when doing each cylinder at a time?.....just curious

Yes you can but you would still like to crank the engine over by hand afterwards to double check your results. I really prefer doing my lash by each individual cylinder though.

Thanks Jetman, Your Help is Greatly Appreciated.....I went ahead and lashed without waiting for an answer....thought I'd get one quicker..but oh well, no worries. When I did it I decided to go ahead and do each cylinder TDC so I could see the poppet travel and not have to worry about it. Going back to finish buttoning it up so I can run it and get the oil flowing and start break in....took a quick break to cool off....it's Freakin Hot in My garage!! Thanks again Jetman

edit: + for You jetman

I personally would prefer to find out how many turns (past zero lash) it takes to bottom out the lifter, then adjust each rocker nut to zero lash plus half that number. That would ensure that each lifter would be in the middle of its adjustment range.

Yes, that's best to see the poppet travel. I'm glad that you did the lash on ecah TDC, now you can feel confident about all of this. Nothing as frustrating as tearing down the upper half to relash, ask me how I know, hahahaha.

Good luck with the rest of the assembly, thank you for the "acknowledgement" too.

I would do each one in the correct order just to be sure. All I was trying to point out in the other thread is that the comments that 1.5 turns is too much isn't accurate and that 1.5T does pretty much center the lifter (for stock rockers and push rods).

But taking shortcuts invariably cause havoc. Do each one correctly.

The number of turns has been the subject of alot of threads. 1.5 is correct for stock ratios. for sbc studs, it is about 1/2 to 3/4 due to the course thread.
I checked mine on the rebuild with a dial guage, to confirm. the big issue is if assembled already determining 0 lash, which is easiest with the side to side motion carefully and slowly.
