Hi there,
I am trying to replace the glass in my driver's side door with a piece I got from Antinull (thanks again!) and I tried looking at Ogre's Cave, but I can't seem to figure out how to get the glass out - without breaking it, that is.

My Chilton's book isn't much help either.

Does anyone know of some special trick to this?

The glass is held to the round stops and track guides with the same steel centered aluminum rivets that are used throughout the door. The basic process is you need to punch out the steel center, and then drill out the aluminum rivets, all while supporting the door glass. Once the guides/stops are removed from the glass it just slides up & out. I have removed the rivets from the rest of the door components, but never done the glass..... but knowing how much force I used on the rest of the door, I always thought that I would be worried about the glass breaking. Usually people use small stainless bolts and nylok nuts when they attach the hardware to their new glass (after sliding it into the door of course). Their are a few threads on here about replacing the glass.

Thyis is a basic guide,on how I changed my door glass.
1.Remove the door skin (use the exact size torx bit).Leave a post if you have a problem removeing the plastic Torx bolts. You will need a curved wrench to remove the nuts holding the base of the side mirror on.Dont worrie if you drop a nut because, you can allways fish them out with a wire and magnet.
2. I used a wooden block and T shirt to support the glass while working on it.Take an angle grinder and grind the rivot heads COMPLETELEY off.Sorry but a Dremmel Tool won't work as well and would be a much slower process.Allow the rivots to cool (because they have expanded from the heat and are harder to remove).
3.Jentley Tap the rivots out,if they arn't comeing out, then you probubley didn't allow to cool or you didnt grind the rivot heads completeley off and make sure you have something behind the glass, like a wooden block and a T-shirt to support and cushon the glass.
4.Now that you have the glass removed, you can clean and grease the door mechanisms (if you have power windows). If you have power door locks.grease the plastic clip that supports the rod, that moves when you lock and unlock the door (grease the clip good).
5.To install the new glass you will now need to go to your local hardware store and get a few nuts and bolts to replace the rivots.Bring an old rivot with you to the store, the bolts should about 1/4 of an inch longer, because you allso have to take into account the nut being attached.Allso make sure the bolts are the same diameter as the rivots. You dont want to use bolts that are too long because they could get caught on something while the window is being rolled up and down.Get a tube of lock tight for the nuts,or a good substitute would be Permatex gasket seal if your tight on the bucks and have a tube of that lyeing around (Another option would be lock nuts).
6.Installation is basicalley the reverse order.

If I missed anyting feel free to add more...

Just did this on my 86. With the door skin and the inside door panel removed, roll the window toward the top. From the inside, you will be able to see the guide / stop blocks on the front and rear lower edge of the door glass. A few inchs inward are the rivets holding the glass to the channel. I used a wood block and shop towel behibd the rivet - outside of door and then used a small center punch to drive the rivet shaft out. Then from the outside, you can grab the end of the shaft and pull it from the rivet. Using a 3/8 dril bit, you can drill the head of the rivet slowly until the head comes off. If the rivet spins, slightly angle the drill. Once the rivet head is removed, gently tap the rivet out. You can also grab the rivet from the back side and twist & pull the rivet out. Just don't "crank" on the rivet. The plastic spacers and washers my be brittle. I have seen these break from time to time so be patient and they will come out. Reinstall with bolts and nylock nuts........ This is the 5th swap I've done and have not broke one yet...the keyword here is "yet"... Good luck....Go slow.
