My 85 GT has run beautifully and flawlessly ever since I bought it. A week ago my Dad was driving it home from the Y when it dies...instantly and without warning while he was cruising at 25 in 3rd gear. He couldn't get it to start at all so he gives me a call and I come and pick him up in our Jeep. Thinking that it could be bad gas, we go down and get some heet and starter fluid. Two bottles of heet and a few sprays of starter fluid later, and she's runnin just as good as before. The next day while I'm at school my dad starts it up and lets it warm up...and it quits again, and he can't get it started. When I get home we do the starter fluid routine again and it fires up instantly, and is running without missing or anything bad...smooth as silk. We drive it down to Schucks where I get some Lucas injector cleaner, I put it in the tank, start it up no prob...runnin great, we almost get out of the driveway and it dies again. It starts up with starter fluid and we drive it back in the parking lot where it dies AGAIN!!!! But this time! It doesn't start at all, even with fluid. We had to push my baby home with the Jeep, which caused me to have to threaten some kids with physical damage who were laughing at me. It seems like it wants to run...it sputters and spits out little exhaust fumes, but she just can't do it. At this point I don't know...either that was some really really bad gas that Costco sold me, or there's something else going on here...but the fact is that in between each time it would die it was running strong as ever...so I just don't know.
Fuel pump or relay problem. Most likely the little hose on the pump to sending unit has a hole in it. If the pump is oe replace the pump. Hope that helps Ryan
Could be the pump relay giving up..swap it with the A/C one next to it, if you have one, and see if that helps. Could also be the pump giving up, or the ignition module, or the pick-up module, or even the HT coil going flaky..good luck!! nick
I would suspect the module. If it doesn't work right, the ecm won't see the reference it needs to energize the fuel pump relay. Modules have a tendency to quit when they get hot, then work fine once they cool down--but they will eventually fail altogether, once they start acting up.
also check the pickup coil in the dist, and the connectors to the module. whe it doesnt start, watch the tach, if it is dead it is one of those! (or the module)

I have the same problem. Do we have a good source for this parts? Thanks! Brit

All those parts are fairly common, you should have no problems locating them.
I found good pricing for electrical stuff at Rock Auto. I have ordered from them before and have had good luck. Make sure you hunt for the 5% discount code.

Ignition module was my first thought. They don't always just die all at once, sometimes they just get really unreliable and then eventually just quit altogether.
