apparently had a rebuilt engine in the last 6000k miles. Over the last 4 weeks I noticed oil pressure guage reading a bit low (15-20psi at idle). I'm coming home tonight and driving it a bit hard (having a little fun, never went over 4500 rpm) the oil light comes on, reads about 10psi on guage, sounds like empty soda can being banged against my engine block. Not so good. I have a good running carbed 3.4 sitting in the garage I was going to install the end of this month, but now I think I might install it sooner. I really don't care about this 2.8, but if it was rebuilt maybe they re-used the original oil pump and it is on it's last leg. Any thoughts?

If there was no documentation with the car that showed the motor was re-built then there is no telling. I buy alot of Fieros and I hear all the time that the motor was just rebuilt 10K ago, blah, blah, blah. Alot of people thing putting new crank bearings, gaskets and a wash down is a rebuild. Sounds like the motor is toast and that 3.4 is calling your name.

you're reading my mind dude, I say they installed new bearings and said it was a full rebuild. I don't fault the guy who sold it to me, but the owner before him. Either way, I really don't care because i have a replacement motor that will fix my problem....in about a weekend

If the previous owner had a cheapo "rebuild" (and it sounds like he did), my guess is that he re-used the original oil pump as well. Unless you already have somewhere a good oil pump for your upcoming 3.4L engine swap, this seems to me like a good time to get one IMHO.

He doesn't need an oil pump for his 3.4L. It is a GMPP high volume oil pump. I know the builder of his 3.4L very well.
Me, It is my carb'd 3.4L that I sold him when I went with the V-8.

Now I begin to wonder if ditch purposely trashed the 2.8L in that car he bought from somebody else just to have an excuse to swap that carb'd 3.4L into it.
For those who haven't seen it, a classic thread that Oreif created in 2005 reported on the dyno results from an interesting side-by-side build-up, "3.4L carb'd VS. 3.4L EFI Results." It's archived on Pennock's Fiero Forum, and is readily accessible via this link: //www.fiero.nl/forum/A...060206-2-066575.html .
Since either one of Oreif's 3.4L build-ups in that thread seems like it would be great fun in a Fiero, the question becomes, "Did ditchpurposely trash the 2.8L in his car just to have an excuse to swap in the carb'd 3.4L he bought from Oreif?"
All joking aside, good luck with your 3.4L engine swap project, ditch. The end result should make for a fun ride.

Yeah, I guess the whole thing does look suspect . When I bought this car back in november my intentions were to put the 3.4 in this spring, so the 2.8 would have been pulled regardless. My schedule was to do it at the end of this month, but considering the current situation I think I might start this weekend.
It's definitely fun to drive. I had already swapped this 3.4 into one of my previous fieros, but that car had so many issues it wasn't worth the effort. Drove it less than 2 years and pulled the engine last spring. Gave the roller to my brother in law because he was wanting a project. The 86 4spd I have now is solid, minimal rust, and overall is in great condition. Should be a good match for the 3.4.
