Greetings all.....

My recent adoption of this 1986 Fiero SE has me in a state of confusion. The 2 rear E Brake cables are cut off near the calipers. It appears that all the hardware is there at the calipers but I am not sure of what hardware is needed to connect the 2 cables to the main cable. If anyone has some pics or a description of how it works, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks in advance for your response(s).

The E-Brake cable on the 86 Fiero is fairly simple.

It consists of 3 cables total, an adjuster mechanism, the handle inside, and the Levers/Springs on the calipers.

The E-Brake handle pulls on the Front Cable. The front cable sheath is mounted in the adjuster, and the center part of the cable links directly to the passenger side E-Brake cable which runs to the passenger side caliper.

This means that when you pull the handle, the passenger side caliper would engage IF and ONLY if, the Adjuster was mounted solid...

The Driver's side Brake Cable mounts to the opposite end of the adjuster using a long threaded rod. This is what sets the tension for the E-Brake cables.

Now, with the Driver's cable in the adjuster, the front cable mounted through the adjuster, and the end of the front cable and the Passenger cable clipped together, when you pull the E-Brake, it pulls on the passenger side cable, which causes the Adjuster to pull towards the passenger side as well. When it pulls that way, that causes the driver's side cable to tighten up.

The adjuster just equalizes the tension between both sides, and also, when properly set, prevents the cables from sagging when the E-Brake is disengaged.

Over-all cable movement should be less than 2 inches when setting the e-brake.

If you have trouble with this, let me know. I can draw a diagram.

One more question. Where does the adjuster mount?

The adjuster doesn't mount. It just hangs there using the tension on the cables.

You probably need the metal clip that ties the cables together as well.

http://fierostore.com Go there, click Brakes on the left. Choose E-Brake, and find the 84-87 Adjuster. (Not sure if 88 used the same one or not.)
