Hello,
I have an 88gt that is making a horrible screeching noise and looses power at any rpm over 2000. I have done the following things to isolate the noise and have been unsuccessful.
Rebuilt the automatic transmission.
Disconnected the torque convertor and run the engine.
Took off the belts.
Replaced the intake gaskets, examined the cam lobes.
Confirmed that the vacuum system is intact.
Ran compression check, 150-160 all cylinders.
Disassembled the oil filter looking for metallic debris, none present, oil pressure is good.
Changed the fuel pump.
Changed the fuel filter.
Changed the distributor.
Changed the fuel pressure regulator.

The noise seems to come from the top of the engine but I cannot localize it. I was thinking spun cam bearing but the oil and filter is clean.
Does anyone think that a fuel injector going bad could generate such a nosie? I am going to replace those tonight.

Thanks for any ideas anyone may have!!!!
Best regards, Todd

It sounds like you have checked many things already. My first thought when I hear about a screeching noise is a piston just about to seize as I have heard this before. I lean this way as you say you loose power at 2000 RPM.

Did you have an oil analysis done or just check for chunks visually?

How does the engine run, does it idle smoothly?

You can also pop your distributor cap off and check the shaft for play. The dizzy makes horrible screeches when its burning out.

Hello,
Have tried 2 different distributors so I do not believe it is that but will check. Would not a failing piston give a bad or slightly different compression reading? I am going to try the fuel injectors tonight and if that does not fix it the engine is coming out.
Thanks!

AC compressor siezed? Water pump siezed? Horrible screeching has been usually from belt slippage.

I have a question about an 85 auto with a six I tested that makes a loud screech.
From a dead stop the engine made a loud screech and the car did not move engine reved, once the screech faded the car then did move.
This can't be just a belt. The car ran OK when the loud screech was gone. Has about 120 K on it. The seller did say the "check engine" light would come on too.
Input appreciated.

One more thing that can screech is a bad throw out bearing. That will be a PITA to check though. In your case you don't have to worry since you have an automatic transmission.

Have you tried to narrow the location down by useing a stick , pipe, or metal bar as stethiscope?
The only other thing I can add at this time is check the starter to see if it's staying engaged to the flywheel/flexplate when the car is running. WHile you're down there make sure the flywheel/flexplate isn't loose. But none of these would explain the power loss.

Just for grins while you're testing pull the oxygen sensor out of it's hole and run it for a short time with the hole open. See it makes any difference in the power or noise.
