I am trying to replace the shift cable on my 4speed 84 Muncie...

According to Buddycraigg it's supposed to look something like this:

and this is what I found:

I'm guessing someone rigged up the end of this cable, so my question is where do a get a new ball and socket bolt to go on the new shift cable??

Thanks for looking.

Jonathan

The new cable has the ball & socket ,,on old cables the ball pulls out of socket and a repair is done, cheaper than replacement cost
If you plan on keeping the car get the Rodney Dickman cables

Thanks for your help...(I've given you a "+") but I'm still confused. First of all Rodney Dickman doesn't advertise cables for the Muncie M19 (4 cylinder 4 speed) so I already bought new cables from the Fiero store.

The problem is the end of the replacement cable is different than what I found on the car. The select cable, (from the Fiero Store) was previously replaced at a shop so I'm not sure what they did to make it work.

Now I'm trying to replace the shift cable and the new cable has a similar ball and socket end fitting but I don't have a ball and socket bolt to attach it with. What's in the car is what's shown in the picture. Is this the stock configuration or did someone rig it up to look that way?

This is the new cable:

The easiest solution is to get a new ball stud but I don't even know where to start looking for such a bolt.

Any help is appreciated.

The nut on top of the ball holder is something that someone did for a fix because the ball kept coming out of the cable, common issue. All you need is a good ball to slip into the new cable and you are good to go.

I kind of guessed at that. Where can get one of these ball studs? Is this a common part that I can get at the Autozone?

I looked at autozone after I posted but not really forsure what its called. I tried several things but nothing came up. Might have to take the ball up there and see if someone working there is smart enough to give you an answer. If not them find someone to send you one.

Thanks Stephen...typical Fiero 5 minute job turns into a week long effort because someone a decade ago did a hack job instead of fixing it the right way.

I looked on Rodney Dickman's site and he calls it a "ball stud". He supplies them with his cables, so I wrote to him and asked if I could buy one off him. I hope he'll sell it to me, or else I'll have to hit all the auto parts stores and hope to get lucky.

Third option is someone on here has one in their junk bolt box and will take pity on me?
