Well my 3.4 book says 37 ft/lbs then rotate an additional 77 degrees of turn. My 2.8 book says 63 to 72 ft/lbs. I used the 37 ft/lbs plus 77 degrees. But I also haven't run my 3.4 engine to see if it explodes.....

That's interesting. The book I have, "How to Rebuild Your GM V-6 60* Engine," lists on page 159 "68-72 lb/ft" (similar to the "63 to 72" 2.8L figures Hudini found) for the "main bearing cap bolts" of both the 2.8L and 3.1L, but has nothing at all about the coressponding figures for a 3.4L, nor anything about "an additional 77 degrees of turn."

They changed the specs to 37 ft lbs + 75 (or 77?) degrees for the later motors, or the 3.4 DOHC at least. The main bolts and bearing caps are the same as far as I know. The angle torque probably just gives a more consistent clamping load, but 37 ft lbs + 77 degrees is a lot more torque.. so make sure you only tighten them according to how they were tightened when the engine was line-bored.
They will be out of spec if you tighten them to the wrong torque. My machinist and I checked this when we were building my 3.4 DOHC. They were in spec with the 37 ft lbs + 75 degrees.
