Hey guys, i was driving my 86 6 cyl fiero yesterday in the country going about 55 to 60 mph and it stalled out !? while still moving i put it in nuteral and turned the key and it started back up. it happened 2 more times that day. its never happend before and seemed fine today. i got the car in december. drove it a few times before it got to nasty and parked it with a half tank of gas. it has been sitting for a month or two till yesterday. i started it up went and had the oil changed then drove 2 towns away to my fathers and thats when it happend. i just need a idea so it dont happen again . i dont want it to become a problem with the anniversary coming up and all. so any help would be great. maybe sombody here had the same problem and a solution. the fuel pump is new but seems really loud when you turn the key and when running. thanks for takin the time

Carry a spare ignition module, and get a some cheapy Harbor Freight nut drivers so you can carry the spare 5.5 mm driver along with the module so you can change it in emergency roadside situations.

FieroCS, I had what may have been a similar problem about 7 years ago.

Before its ignition control module was replaced, the engine would just quit after running a few miles, but not on a short trip where the engine never really got warm. When it died, it didn't sputter, stumble, or exhibit any drama like that. Instead, it just quit running after a few miles, almost as "cleanly" and with as little fanfare as a light bulb connected to a light switch that had simply been turned off.

If yours also didn't sputter or stumble, but just stopped as "cleanly" as a light switch being turned off, my guess would be what KurtAKX alluded to above, the ignition module going bad.

One difference was my `86 GT would restart, but only after waiting a few minutes first. Eventually, after a few more episodes of the engine quitting "cleanly," it wouldn't restart at all, after I reached the middle of nowhere. Also, that business of my GT's engine eventually not restarting at all does sounds a little different from your experience, and I may have replaced the distributor as well; I don't remember.

In any case, did your engine just quit "cleanly" or did it sputter and stumble beforehand?

Yeah, if it's a "clean" stall, the ignition module has definitely (probably ) failed. Especially since it happened after you were driving it for a while, I would just about bet money that the ignition module is going out.
