I've got the motor out and the timing cover off while I replace the water pump. The timing chain has about 1/4 inch slack in it but the motor runs fine. What's the normal amount of slack/tension on this chain? I'm debating about putting a new one on. I know I should while the engine is out but how hard is that lower sprocket to get off? Plus why mess with it when it seems fine!

With 1/4" I'd replace it while it is open. A new one will be tighter.

Replace the sprokets too. Yeah more money, but not that much and do really want to pull it again later?

With that much slop do you have a dampner left in it?

the lower sprocket comes off pretty easy with any gear puller. Well worthe the money to do it now. the dampner is the only thing you may have to tweak up, some of the new ones hit the sprockets and the bolt holes don't line up. (top sprocket hits the tips)
you can just grind the tips off the dampner.

Does anyone have a recommended brand or store to buy a new timing chain set?

Is the regular non-roller type good enough or is the double roller type worth the extra $100?
