I just got into my fuel tank last night to change the fuel pump and to take a look at the fuel level sending unit and its just trashed The wires are actually falling apart and i did some cleaning but still get random jumps or complete disconnection throughout the throw and at the full position it loses contact every time. What i would like to know is, has anyone ever got an aftermarket level sender to work in the fiero tank? This one is beyond repair and my parts car has even more miles so i dont want to see that one at all.

I was there a few weeks ago. What I did was to cut the black plastic heads off of the sending unit and bend the little prongs up just a bit so I could open her up. I used an Xacto blade to remove the tarnish off of the wire wraped edge piece, and the little brass flat piece that sits on the float arm. be sure and clean any where the board makes contact with the metal part of the sending unit. No contact, no trabajo. Once you get it open you can see how it is supposed to work. I cleaned all with some thinner, and re assembeled it. It has about a month on it now and all is well. I only put in 2 gallons of fuel at first because I wanted to see where 2 gallons was on the gauge. I then added 3 more gallons. It was right at 1/2 tank then, as it should be. I haver filled up my tank only one time since, and it was showing a little over the full mark. It holds about 10 gallons, and seems to be reading pretty close to actual remaining fuel. I have some left over pieces from a V6 sending unit that I was gonna save for my next Fiero, if you cant get your pieces to work. Good luck Joe Crawford Texas

i THINK the GM factory unit has been dis-continued but JCWhiteny has a universal (0-90 ohms) that should work. If you do a SEARCH, you'll find the info you need because this has been discussed many times before.

I've done a SEARCH and it likes to always give me the same results when i search anything no matter what it is. It's BROKEN. had to post the question.
lol. Its not broken, just very cantankerous. It is nearly impossible to find anything with it if you don't know exactly how to talk to it. And usually you'll get a bunch of threads of people saying "SEARCH"
A note on that thread though, the only other person I've seen attempt that repair abandoned it and went with a FieroStore direct replacement unit. I haven't seen anyone else actually do that repair and post it here. Shouldn't be too hard though, the main issue being any mistakes means dropping the tank again.

wow - i never knew Fiero Store had OEM ones - good info.
A long time ago, I used to post and wait for people to reply. it took a long time sometimes but, more importantly, the answers you get sometimes depend on who is replying . After months and months of reading posts, i started remembering stuff I had seen and started using SEARCH more often. I have to admit that after doing it once, I sometimes would just hit it again (without changing anything) and it would give different results. All in all, it's no TOO bad but you do have to be kinda lucky to get the info you want
