Besides my Fiero, I own an SRT-4 (PeonThis!). Whenever I drive it, all I'm thinking about is what a great swap into a Fiero the driveline would be. It is a great engine and with the Dodge staged upgrades, it is within striking distance of 350 streetable horsepower. And the engines and transmissions are getting cheaper all the time, Is anyone currently trying to install one of these into a Fiero? Or is there some technical reason it is not being done?

All kidding aside, I heard talk of this years back. I think there was some kind of brick wall that kept people from trying it, but I may be wrong. Have you tried searching yet? You might dig up something.
It would be a very efficient swap though.

the neon was a piece of crap and ive worked on many of them and i agree. from what ive heard the srt-4s are just the same crap only faster. gm makes much better engines than anything dodge does.

I never let that stop me from having massive amounts of fun with a car. PeonThis! has surprised many a person who thought so. I've owned it since new and it is as good a car as I have ever owned.
Anyway, I have no objection to the Ecotec, but no one seems to have produced a swap I could do. I can follow directions but I'm not a fabricator.

Eco swaps will be common soon. Just takes some time, I guess. I think a couple of people offer some mounts and stuff. GM has a part number for an adapter for the tranny.
I think it's a great idea. One of the biggest advantages of the swap would be the bulletproof tranny, since GM evidently considers it unnecessary to make a strong manual transverse transmission.

BTW, has GM come out with any staged kits for the Ecotewc in the Cobalt (please don't tell me to fish on cobalt forums to find out)? If so, one of my needs would be satisfied - not spending every Fri,Sat, Sun burning chips, etc. trying to get my completed swap to run right. A plug and play staged upgrade supplied by an OEM or reliable aftermarket supplier is the way to car enjoyment Nirvanna and is a major attraction for the SRT-4 engine.

Vehicle multiplexing.
It is a major concern when swaping in newer engines into another car. A lot of newer cars require the engine control module to communicate with the transmission control module (if fitted, ie automatics), body control module, abs module, and possibly a few others to get needed information. You would have to install all these modules to get a lot of the benefits of the new engine as well as the factory backed performance upgrades you talked about; not impossible, but time consuming and rather costly. You can use a stand alone engine control module, but then you lose the ability to use those factory tuned settings for performance upgrades, and are back to square one with programming your own chips/modules. This is the only reasson I have not yet swapped in a newer engine from say Chrysler or Ford or Jaguar or BMW or Mercedes.... Once you figure out the multiplexing, then it's just a bunch of fabricating, becuase NO ONE makes the mounts to swap it in, then try and find a dealer to upload those new settings (assuming an independent shop doesn't have access to the information). Just my .02 worth.
edit: not trying to steer you away from a unique and interesting swap (I'm working on one myself) just trying to give a little more information.
