I can't remember what combinations of which work with the later model 2.8s.

Does anyone know if the oil pan from a LB8-equipped 88 Firechicken is a direct install on to a 87 Fiero's 2.8, or would the timing cover need to be switched over as well?

85 and 86 oilpans and timing covers go together
87 and 88 oilpans and timing covers go together
The 87 and 88 Fiero timing cover will mate up with 87 and later 60* V-6's.
You cannot use any other timing cover as the timing scale is on the right side of the cover for all other cars/trucks and the Fiero is on the left side of the cover.
Also I believe there are difference's in waterpumps on some vehicles as well.

Yep, I do believe that the longitudinal water pump applications spin the pump backwards compared to the Fiero and other transverse applications.
