I was looking at a true roller timing set and they state that the balance shaft gear needs to be removed.
How much does this affect the motor? Thanks

You will get more vibration, its job is to smooth out the motor. If you remove it (the balance shaft) you must also plug the oil passages that used to lubricate the balance shaft. I personaly would not do this just to use a different timing chain, but there are those that are building 11 second cars that will benefit from this typr of mod.

just get the rotating assembly balanced and it will be fine. My runs real smooth without it.
