So my 86 GT makes this hissing noise which can be heard from the air scoop on the drivers side and becomes very pronounced if I take the cover off my air filter can. Sounds like a leaf or something might be stuck in the air box, but I got no visual when I checked. Engine seems to be breathing alright, but its an annoying sound and its just not right. When I kill the engine, there is one last gasp, like a dying vacuum sound...I'm going to put a new intake kit in, but I am curious about this noise. Also, how is the filter/intake kit from the Fiero Store...West Coast Fiero?

thanks

If the noise annoys you now just wait till you put in one of those kits the removes the water separator. The noise will get louder. The hissing noise coming from the intake is normal. It's just air rushing in. If you use a K&N air filter it will make it louder and it will get even louder if you remove the water separator part that is just behind the grill on the side of the car.

Welcome to the forum,I agree, sounds like you would be happeyier with the stock intake.Do you still have the air filter inside the air cleaner? If you have a small plastic intake cover on the drivers side body try removeing it and inspect for any debrie such as leaves that may be caught in there..

If you don't like the noise, then you certainly won't like it when it's increased by putting in a cold air intake.

Even with the stock there is some noise you can hear from the intake. That is somewhat normal. I kind of like it. (mine are all stock)

Like said, if you change it you will probably make it louder. The stock intake is actually a pretty good setup as far as I'm concerned. The the intake manifold restrictions allows the stock intake to be more than adequate..

Sounds like when you use to flip the lid on the air cleaners on the v8's.

A standard installation of the one from The Fiero Store (their part number 52606) appears to lose the stock Fiero cold air induction (CAI) system, effectively replacing it with an under-the-decklid "WARM air induction" system, a negative.

What West Coast Fiero calls the "2.8 to 3.4 rocker arm Fiero cold air intake system" (no part number given) is better in that it retains cold air induction, but it would make changing the filter more difficult, as is evidenced by this comment on their website describing that item: "The Air Cleaner is positioned in the fender well, just behind the air scoop." Personally, I don't want to be fooling around taking apart part of the inside of the driver's side rear fenderwell just to change an air filter.

Unless you elect to retain the stock, unmodified Fiero CAI, I suggest getting the one from Rodney Dickman, which is less than one-third the cost of the ones I mentioned above. Referred to as his "True Cold Air Intake System" on his website ( http://www.rodneydickman.com ), it's discussed in the General Fiero Chat thread, "Rodney's New Air Intake," accessible via this link: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/F...1/HTML/060029-2.html

I've only had the car for just over five months, my first Fiero, so obviously I have much to learn...yes I've checked the tube behind the intake grille, I blew it out with an air compressor also, and I definitely have an air filter haha I've replaced it twice...Upon further inspection I found that the bottom of the air filter housing is all rusted out and loose...this has gotta be it.
