Ok,
So I just got an 1984 SE. Less than a 1000 miles on a completely brand new clutch, and rebuilt motor. It was really cheap and couldn't pass it up. The previous owner just lost interest in the car. He completed all the body work and got the car ready for paint....in doing so, he switched out the original deck lid with one from an 85. Still has the lug. rack; however, now has the center hump rather than the center grills. He also switched out the side panels/vent covers for the 85+ versions. He said he did this due to the fact that the decklids on 84s cracked due to being weak cus of the center grill.

My mom's 84 doesn't show any signs of this cracking and I have another good 84 deck lid I could put on this one--I would like to do so to put it back to "original"; however, if with constant use they break or crack, I wont. (I plan on using this as a daily driver)

Has anyone experienced this cracking or breaking on 84 decklids?

Same problem on my Dad's 84 Indy, lid is cracked in the middle, where the members that connect to the hinges meet the solid part of the deck.

We guessed it to be caused by someone slamming the decklid while a screwdriver or something was sitting on the strut tower, not to be a design flaw.

Be interesting though if it really is a problem. I would suggest staying with the later model lid anyway, the 84 lids let a ton of water onto the front of the engine.

If you want to change back to the 84 style decklid, go right ahead. I wouldn't, but I don't like the old style decklid, and really don't like that magnesium grill right over a hot engine. If I were doing the switch, tho, keep the later style decklid in a safe place incase you change your mind later.

Do you realize that once Magnesium starts to burn, nothing can put it out? The 84 recall was not only due to crappy rods, but once the fire got started, the vehicle was DONE! If you camp, have you ever seen the Magnesium fire started tool? It is a block of magnesium with a sparker on the side. Remember this if you are ever broke down and need to start a fire. Just some shavings from your grill and a few flint sparks and VOILA! a fire!. Why do you think the 84 was the ONLY fiero to have a Magnesium grill!? The college idiots who designed it didn't think that far ahead! That grill I believe, was the downfall of the fiero. If at ALL possible, NEVER, NEVER use that grill/hood design! You might want to carry a piece of it on your keychain though to start a fire in an emergency though!
