On an 88 Formula. Can I replace the suspension with the suspension from an earlier year car ? Maybe take the front cross member and everything on it and swap it - everything including the steering rack. What about the rear - swap cradles ? I'm just wondering if this is just a bolt-on type thing to do, or is it a lot more complicated ? Thanks.

If I remember reading here correctly, I thought the rear shock towers were smaller diameter on the 88's, so you should be careful about swapping the rear cradle. Not 100% sure, but something to watch out for.

You can do it, but it isn't quite bolt-in....there's a bit more to it. More important, though...Why? The 88 has a much better suspension and brakes compared to the 87 and earlier. It's one of the reasons why some people swap the 88 cradle into the 87 and earlier cars.

You can not swap a pre88 front suspension onto an 88, there are "on-frame" mounts for the shock and lower control arm. You probably could modify everything to fit, but please don't replace the better suspension with the horrible one!

I'm curious why you want to do this? Better availability of new parts?

I have an 85SE kitcar that I have so much money in, I'm married to it. it has 16" wheels and Yokohama AVSdB low noise tires and all rubber suspension - I LOVE the way it rides. My 88 Formula is like a go-kart; MUCH fun on smooth roads, but NOT much fun on my daily drive over the truck-embattled local LA roads. Since my Formula is a t-top and an excellent car, I was thinking about making this mod to (1) get the ride I wanted and (2) be able to keep 1 set of parts for both cars. I'm finding that fieros really don't sell for much, and haven't found an 86 or 87 GT automatic + cash as trade yet. I guess I'll have to keep looking. thanks everybody for your replies ....

If anybody has an 86 or 87 in good shape (with working A/C ) and is interested in a trade for my 88 Formula, PM me .... If the car has a 3800 SC, I'll add $$$ into the deal ....
