I have a 85 4cylinder with a original stock muffler. The muffler has a hole in it about 2-3inches in diameter. Naturally the car is louder but I was wondering what other negative side effects there are to running the car this way. Specifically gas mileage, setting timing/idle, power gain/loss,etc. I'm also interested in hearing about what my options are in replacing it.

As far as replacement goes, i would measure it, then buy a replacement off the net, then take it to a muffler shop.

There are no real side effects to running with a loud exhaust except for a headache and trouble with the law.

Side effects may include eviction, pain in the wallet, etc.

The only real problem outside of noise is that it might make it easier for exhaust fumes to flow into the passenger compartment, and it could dump extra heat into the area around the hole.

Replacement close to stock use flowmaster,,cut pipe as close to muffler as you can get..then file down the welds(or use new fangle grinder) so you can easily mount new muffler. I just hacksaw thru pipe use new blade for both sides.might want to make T type tool to remove and install springs .. they are pain in buttochs to remove and replace,, I use cherry bomb straight thru it is quiet enough to idle beside police car but has nice sound going thru the gears, cherry bomb has angled inlet and outlet which manke it a pain to install in stock position I have mine where cat use to be,there is a wide variety of adapter pipes available at most auto parts store

Does anyone have the Flowmaster 80 series part number that will fit in the stock location?

The smallest one at Summit was the FLO-42583 (probably Summit part number though)
