84 4cyl running lean
I’m halfway expecting it to be a split in the hose on the fuel pump in the tank.
I wont get a chance to take a look at until tomorrow night so I wanted to ask how others test the pressure?
I’ve got my own ideas but 14,429 heads are better that one.

Does it run lean under all conditions, or only at high throttle? It's probably not a fuel pressure problem if it runs lean at idle and still revs high. More like a bad sensor somewhere.

thanks Jax for the input.

But I’m actually surprised that the car was driven over to my house.
With a pressure gauge on the output side of the fuel filter and the fuel pump “hot-wired” it almost gets up to 5psi and then drops to 0 within a few seconds of turning off the pump.
The TBI is expecting to have about 15psi.
Again I say I can’t believe it drove here under its own power.

So the tank has to come out and either the hose is split or the fuel pump is bad.

Ok, I'm looking at the shop manual for 88.
Fuel system pressure test-2.5L TBI engine LR8
I'm going to paraphrase some to leave off the duh stuff.
Pull the fuel pump fuse @ fuse block.
Crank engine, if it starts it will die.
With ign off, replace fuse.

Remove air cleaner and plug thermal vacuum port on throttle body unit.
Remove steel fuel pipe between TB and fuel filter. Use backup wrench to hold fuel nut on TB and fuel filter when removing line.
Install fuel preassure guage between TB and fuel filter. A 9-15 psi guage, such as J-29658 should be used.

Start car, should have 9-13psi, if not refer to EFI Diagnosis chart A-5

Remove preassure guage and zip things back up, torque to 19-25 lb. ft.

Fuel Pump Flow Test:
Fuel pump should supply 1/2 pint or more in 15 seconds.

Hope this helps, want me to look up EFI Diagnosis chart A-5?

I put together fittings and hose to connect a pressure/vaccuum gage to metal line feeding the fuel filter. I forget what fittings I used, but you're a smart resourceful guy, you can figure that part out! Obviousely, if you wanted to check fuel pressure with the engine running, you would use a TEE in place of the fuel filter.
