Anyone ever use Automotive Paint in anything like a wagner power sprayer to paint their car? If so, how were the results and what brand and model sprayer did you use?

Here's one (story) from the vault:
The *first* car I painted all over (well except for the top) was when acrylic enamel first came out. I was about 15 or 16. It was my '65 Rambler American - white & I wanted it dk. blue metallic. Painted it in a sandy gravel driveway on a windy day, between the gusts (was very lucky). Didn't have a compressor or even a paint gun: all I had was a vacumn cleaner (canister type with a fitting for the hose on the blowing end) & the spray gun that came with it designed for insectesides & house paint. It was one of the best paintjobs I've ever done!!! NO runs; VERY little orange peel (almost slick as glass!); & the only flaw was a metallic "run" down each side of the hood ridge (not a surface run just a difference in the metallic). I did use a quick drying reducer & hardner. Great little car I wish I still had it...

Just goes to show what you can do when you try. Biggest thing with painting is watching it go on & adjusting your distance & speed accordingly. Now, I'm not saying what you want to try will work with today's paints, & I don't shoot anything but base/clear now (for durability reasons), but you can give it a try. Use some old panels/scrap parts & test it, & if it works out go for it. Keep an eye on the conditions - temp, humidity, reducer type & amount - & duplicate them as much as possible when you do the final painting.
The other thing to consider (especially with base/clear) is you can sand out the orange peel & buff it, so don't worry if it goes on a little "dry".
