Has anybody else had a problem with leaking from the 84-88 AXLE STABILIZER BEARING & SEAL from the Fiero Store? They advertise it as a "high quality assemblies that will extend both axle and transmission life". Mine has leaked from day 1. Before I spend another $80 on a new set of seals I'd like to know what experience others might have had.

Thanks!

Did you use any sealer (RTV) around the outside of the seal/bearing assembly before you installed them? If not, the leak is probably coming from there. I installed a set (from Rodney Dickman) in my 88 about 4 years ago and had a leak around the outside since I didn't use any sealer. I found the leak before reinstalling the cradle back into the car, so I was able to get the tranny up on the bench, carefully clean around the outside of the bearing/seal and inject some sealer. No leaks since then. The seals themselves are replacable if that's where your leak is, $6 each from Rodney Dickman. Make sure the part of the axle that rides in the seal and the bearing is smooth and clean.

Mine did same but did not polish axle and get rust off before hand and it wears out the seal as it sticks out past where the stock seal sits.

Hi - My 88GT V8 swap is about 6-7 yrs old and I installed these stabilizers. I don't recall if the donor car had leaks or not but it seemed like a good idea. I sealed the Outside Diameter of the parts and was careful about the ID as well. Now, 20,000 or so miles later - no leaks. The leak can come from 3 places: #1 is between the OD of this part and the transmission housing. #2 is between the lip seal and the axle. #3 and really unlikely is between the lipseal and the outer wrapped steel casing of the extension seal itself. Make sure your axle sealing diameter is clean and has no scratches/gouges and then make sure the part is well sealed and seated squarely into the transmission housing. Good luck?

mine have been in 1-1.5 years now, no leaks. l got the ones from Rodney, and got the blue loctite sealer he sells as the suggested sealer. On the one axle that was not replaced, I polished the axle smooth with some trimite sandpaper to clear off all the rust. I cleaned the case side with acetone to get all the old crudded oil off and have the sealer stick.
care during the install is the biggest leak preventative. tho it is always possible the avles are undersized slightly, and rusted, the combo when cleaned could be too small to seal properly.
