Does anyone know what's the best (easiest) way to change the ignition switch on an 2.5 standard 86 Fiero. This is a new one for me and I don't really want to take the whole steering column apart if I don't have to?
Cheers!

The ignition switch is mounted on the top of the steering column, behind the dash. To get to it, you need to drop the steering column. Remove the four bolts / nuts holding the steering column up and let it rest on the seat and you'll be able to get to the ignition switch easily.
When you go to buy a new one, make sure you get the right one. Automatic or manual transaxle, tilt steering or not- there's 4 different switches.

First off thank you for replying, the reason for changing the ignition switch is several times the car won't start with no sounds or clicks. I went thru high and low trying to find out what was the problem, I tested my fusible links, the starter, the solenoid and pretty much all wires involved. Keeping in mind that this happens randomly, I must of read every post on the subject with no real conclusion until one day it happened again and this time I got Pi... Off bang the steering column and tried again and dam thing started. So now I need to get at the ignition switch to see what's going on and most likely will change it for a new one (there only $40.00 or so).

Just remember that the ignition switch is held on by pan head screws, use a mirror if you can't see them.Allso make sure that you adjust it befor putting everthing back together, that means try turning the key after tightening it down, allso make sure you can turn the key to all positions such as accesory (I beleave the holes are elongated for adjustment). If nothing changes much after installation,it might be the key switch.

Do your interior lights dim when you turn to the crank position? I had that same problem and it turned out that my negative battery cable was loose.
