I was greasing up the (87) brake caliper slider pins while changing out brake hoses and ran into a couple of questions.

Does the brake slider pin AND the outer sleeve get greased on an 87 Fiero brake caliper?

Is there a sleeve on both front and rear caliper pins?

How hard is it to remove the sleeve from the rear calipers?

Does the caliper slide on the sleeve, pin or both?

I ask this because I did the fronts first, greased the 4 front caliper pins (pin only). Greased pins on one side of the rear then I discovered a sleeve on the pin on other rear caliper. I’m like WTF, did I do the job right or did I miss something? I have to go back and extract a seized, stripped out pin in one of the rears, just wanted some opinions before I revisit my Fiero brakes.

Thanks

I don't have a caliper in front of me but, if I recall correctly, the pin (actually it is a socket head bolt) solidly attaches the sleeve to the spindle. The pin is captured inside the sleeve by a small detent int he sleeve. You can gently tap on the bolt to remove it from the sleeve. The caliper slides on the sleeve. I usually remove the sleeves and clean out the old grease with a Q-Tip and then run a strip of rag through the bore. The inside diameter of the hole the sleeve rides in has a red O-Ring on either end. The sleeve actually rides on these O-rings. I slather some disk brake grease on the inside diameter of the hole and on the outside surface of the sleeve then push the sleeve into the hole. It should slide back and forth smoothly with a little bit of force.

Each caliper (84 thru 87 models) has two pin/sleeves. I don't have any experience with 88 model calipers.

Clean off any grease that squeezes out whenyou insert the sleeve.

Hope this helps.

Just put some new ones in mine last weekend.. The sleeves and the pins both get greased... because the pins are screwed into the caliper bracket.. It is my understanding that you want it to float as much as possible..to get even pad wear.

( and the new ones I put in didn't have any O - Rings...... )

The bolt does not move so other than geasing the threads to keep them from rusting you don't have to worry about the bolt.

The pin you want geased well but it's not a matter of just putting grease on the pin.

You might like to read my post on rebuilding calipers, I have some info and pics of the pin.

I learn something new everyday thanks to my PFF friends.

Lets see if I got this right, the caliper floats on the sleeve which floats on the pin (bolt). I have to remove the sleeve from the caliper, clean the bore and apply the grease to the pin and outside of sleeve and reinstall.

What is the easiest way to knock the sleeve out of the caliper?

The pin or sleeve is basically one part. On the stock ones the bolt it held in the sleeve with a punch mark and you really don't have to both taking them apart unless they are really dirty. Just clean the outside of th sleeve that should do it unless it's really rusty.

You just push the bolt and sleeve ( called the pin ) out of the caliper as one piece. The sleeve does not float on the bolt. Once you tighten the bolt the sleeve and bolt do not move so other than putting grease on the bolt for rust prevention it the bolt does not need much.

Thanks Dogerunner, I appreciate the information. I didn't know about the sleeve until the last caliper, oh man alive, I went through all that work and I really didnt accomplish much at all. Those stupid pins all came out without the sleeves, I didn't know any better. All that ambition got me nowhere fast.

I have to knock the sleeves out of the calipers, any suggestions? Any way to do this without disconnecting the brake hoses?

Did I ever mention that I hate Fiero brakes?
