I recently passed my smog test but a little confused about the results and what had changed since the failure I had 2 days and 69 miles prior.
Results of the first test on the 21st mileage was 152,401 this one failed.
%Co2 %O2 HC measured Co% measured NO measured
15MPH 13.6 0.2 154 1.99 174 HC & CO% failure
25MPH 14.6 0.1 16 0.72 81 CO% failure

I took it straight home and did a full tune-up cap, rotor, plugs, wires, O2, pcv, air filter and today on my way home from work I had a new cat put on. I didn't do anything to the timing except check before and after the tune-up to make sure it didn't move. I didn't change anything with the EGR since the readings were below the average. The exhuast guy putting on the cat said old cat could still look through it but the element was real dark but not plugged or broken. It was also on the same tank of gas.

Results of todays test was passing the mileage at 152,470 but something isn't right.
%Co2 %O2 HC measured CO% measured NO measured
15MPH 15.0 0.1 2 0.00 555
25MPH 15.0 0.1 1 0.00 526

My question is what would make the NOX shoot up so much? I am happy that my only 88GT has passed but I just want to understand what could cause the NOX go the wrong way.

Hey guess what I got a pretty little ses light last night code 32 for an EGR problem that would explain the Nox going up and I'm just lucky to get past smog before the part of the smog equipment having a issue that could have made it fail.

NOx is produced by high combustion temps..

Looks like you leaned out the mixture judging by the lower HC emissions

A leaner mixture will cause combustion temps to rise in turn causing more NOx
