I tried to remove my filthy rear pillar mounted speaker covers today, they look like they should be pried off but mine would not budge! What is the proper way to remove those things, if prying is not correct? Also, the front speaker covers are also really dirty from years of the previous owner neglect. The fabric seems like it is brittle, and I'm afraid to wash it as I normally would. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for any help!

The rear speakers, you have to remove the pillar panel. The front speakers, I removed the fabric and painted them with paint (Bar B Q black) and they look better than original. Don't use a gloss paint because they reflect in the windshield. Don

Darn! I was going to take a picture of what they look like on the back side but the extra pillar panel is the older style that doesn't have the speakers included- speakers were in the head rests instead. I can describe what it looks like though. On the backside, you'll find that the speaker covers are actually "melted" to the panel. It looks like you'd have to drill the hole a little to get them to separate. Then glue them back into place once you've recovered them. At least that's how I imagine I would do it. I've had mine apart but haven't recovered them yet only because I'm waiting for the coloring stick that fierofetish used.
As far as recovering the speakers- front or back, I found that removing the fabric was easy. I then replaced it with some new speaker fabric using spray adhesive around the edges and trimming once it set. If you need some, I have extra and would be happy to send some your way.

Thank you for the offer! My interior is the Beechwood color, various colors of tans. If you have the colors for that color fabric let me know, I would love to have the extra stuff you have. Thanks to all for the info about the rears being fused onto the pillar. I will find a way to get the pillar off then.

the beechwood is a pita to match. Rodney Dickman has fabric that is a good match for the fronts. for the rears I use the headliner material I got from the local fabric store after I peeled off the foam backing, it is a near perfect match to the pillar color. to remove the grills, remove the pillars, on the back, they were plastic studs that were melted down to hold them in, if you carefully trim them flat with a razor knif they will pop off. then after you remove the fabric, drill the center of the studs with a small drill and get a small #6 sheet metal screw ah use that and a washer to hold the cover back on.

As they've said, you have to remove the entire panel. If you just want to clean these, spray it with AC Delco foaming auto upholstery and vinyl cleaner (fantastic stuff) , "work it" with a soft nylon brush, and wipe off with damp towels. You may have to do it a couple of times.

Instead of the brush, maybe use a terry cloth towel then rinse with pure water. I'm thinking that the brush might rough up the fabric. Because it's plastic, you can use all the clean water you want without worrying about damaging anything. Pre-Spot Laundry Stain Remover works really well for my stains, as does Woolite carpet cleaner...
