Has anyone ever painted their needles a different color? I have found one paint that says its for painting needles, lightbulbs and to amplify colors on the gauges. Does anyone know what you would have to do to change the color or is it even possible to have the same effect of glowing? (My gauges aren't backlit.)

i have seen people do it on other cars. normally there clear and have paint on the backside, you use a cotton swab and nail polish remover to take the old paint off then paint it the new color. or if you want it brighter use a color led replacement for the bulb

The previous owner had painted the needles in my 85GT blue along with the grate behind the gauge faces. I havent had a chance to get power to the car yet to see what it looks like but I think it might actually work. Good luck.

Im thinking of making a new gauge cluster with different colors and moving the gauges around but i wanted to use the motors out of a car that had the spring return on them so when i turn off the car they go back to position and most of the newer needles are all that deep red. Thanks for the comments i hope it works, ill probably try a couple of different paint types and put them up with my dash build thread.

Edit: I have tried to paint the gear selector with my airbrush before, when i took it out and looked they have a white coat that i think is for illumination, the light behind the selector isn't the best though so i dont know if it worked well that probably isnt the same as the needles though since there isn't a light behind the entire thing.

The Fiero instruments have the orange-red color in the instrument dials and on the back of the front mask. If you're creative you might be able to change the needle color - but those dials are going to be orange-red no matter what color of bulb you put behind them.

Piece of advice. I painted my needles with a fluorescent blue paint mixed with glow in the dark white. Blue does not work well as a fluorescent, they do glow in the dark, but if you have the dash lights on for your numbers that will overpower the blue glow. The blue fluorescent paint does not shine well with a white or clear bulb illuminating it. Your best best if going blue is to paint the needle solid white and use colored bulbs to illuminate.

If you really want a trick gauge needle tip (or even the whole needle) there are two things that will make it look unlike any other you'll probably ever see and anyone that sees yours will go crazy trying to figure it out.

1. Get some tritium paint. Watch makers and jewelers have this stuff but you are going to have to be very discreet about asking for it. If possible, take the needle to them and ask them to pain the tip. Might cost you 1 bucks. Lasts about 20 years. Tritium replaced radium paint in watches for obvious reasons. It makes your needles glow in the dark and gets looks. Your needles will glow without any light source.

2. Paint the needles super bright white. Get a UV bulb and rig it pointing toward the gauge face from the top of the dash overhang. It can be very small. You won't see the light but the needle will jump out at you it will be so bright. Only the needle will be bright so if you want the numbers on the gauge face, you'll have to paint them too. Super bright white, nothing else.

1 is cheap and easy. 2 is a little more work but guaranteed to make everyone look, then beg you to tell them what it is.

If you really want to get crazy, put UV lamps in the over heads and when you open the door at night, everything inside that is white will light up but everything else will be dark. Do this wearing just a white shirt or t-shirt and anyone in the parking lot will stop and look.

I was in a newer Caddy and the digital dash display was astounding. Everything popped right out at you. Kinda cool too that on startup, all the needles swung all the way over then came back to their reading. Reminded me of a pinball game, even had the dings and buzzers, lol.
