My '87 GT 5spd. motor is basically stock. I've replaced the cat converter w/"cherry bomb" glasspack muffler. With the stock muffler still in place the car is nice and mellow sounding w/ a little growl. It almost sounds like the old Triumph TR3/TR4 from the '60's. If I replace the "cherry bomb" with one of the "off road only" cat converter replacement pipes from Fiero Store, will the car get louder/raspier sounding, or stay basically the same?
Thanks, Ray in Texas.

Mine is pretty loud with the original muffler and no cat. I want it a bit quieter myself. Turbos make great mufflers....

Think I'll save my money for something more cost effective. I don't want it too loud, and it really does sound pretty nice w/ the glasspack in place of the "cat". You may want to try the glasspack substitute.
Thanks, Ray in Texas.

you could remove the glasspack and install a resonator in it's place. That usually makes it sound fairly nice.

Did you check under my tires? Oh, sorry wrong cat. lol

It will definately be louder without the glass packs. When I got my 85SE there was a head pipe (with a hole in it) instead of the cat and it was very loud. Put a cat on and it quieted right down. I kinda like your idea though.

From actual experience, there is a very big difference in sound w/o cat in an automatic and a manual car. The manual is throaty and aggressive while the automatic is loud and obnoxious sounding like the typical neglected car.

My 4 cylinder with manual sounds fairly nice. Its ricey enough to get boy racer's attention and still has more bass than many trucks with aftermarket exhaust. If you keep it in gear slowing down to around 1kRPM, the bass resonates with your chest inside the car and works your ears a bit. I can only imagine what its like to be behind it.

Stock muffler and no cat, by the way.

Oooops, my bad, should have qualified myself by mentioning V-6. Glad to hear that your 4-banger sounds good. I'm looking for an 88 coupe with a good ole duke, good information to know, thank you for posting.
