1. it is reliable
2. i want a fast back
3. i want a fiero 5 speed for my l67

now, i am looking around and finding a LOT of affordable autos, but not many 5 speeds. what is involed in doing an auto to 5 speed swap??

If you are doing an engine swap then conversion to manual is not a huge deal...

In addition to the transmission, you need the shifter, the shifter cables, the master and slave cylinders the clutch hydraulic line and and last but not least the pedal assembly.

Some will tell you that you need the manual shift column, I think that's a waste of time, and you might need a few odds and ends like the clutch neutral switch and make sure the ECM for the engine is set up for a manual. That's about it.

Car was a V-6/Auto, now it is a V-8/Manual.

You don't need to swap steering columns, Only difference is a ignition key latch.
You don't need to change ECM, Only difference is the shift light. (you'll have a different ECM with the L67 anyways.)

Basically you just need the clutch system (master/slave cylinders and lines) and the transaxle with all the shifter parts (cables and mounts).

As for reliability, The manuals are fine but you need to inspect it. The getrag 5-spd's are 15-20 years old. So if you start with a beat-up used one it obviously won't last long especially on a dedicated track car. If you have it rebuilt, you will be fine or you might also want to look at the G6 6-spd as there are many new and slightly used ones around.
