ok, I am already familiar with the fiero gas suggestion gauge not being accurate. I know with my fast driving I can get 145 miles around town and 200 miles on the highway. I always reset the tripometer when I fill up just to be on the safe side.

The other day I had to make a short drive into New York City, and I see the gas gauge is close to E. But I have only 90 miles on the tripometer. Hmmm so I am good for at least another 50 miles and am not going anywhere near the far. However rather then take a chance I stop and get it filled up. It takes 3 gallons. The gauge goes to barely over 1/4 tank. I reset the tripometer and make my trip with no problem.

Today I set out for the Garden State Fieros Meeting (about 40miles away). I end up running out of gas and the tripometer reads 48 miles. Ed comes with a 5 Gallon gas tank and the car takes all of it, starts right up and is good to go. I go to the meeting, drive all the way home and then fill up when I am home. Now the car takes a little over 8 gallons and the gauge is back at around 9/10 Full.

So my question is....why did this even happen in the first place? and what could it have been? I think its fine now, being it took the normal amount of gas and the gauge seemed to be like it normally is.

Also is there any chance the gauge being suddenly wrong was a result of the cold weather? All the other gauges seem to have been fine the whole time.

At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul"

Maybe your gas gauge is finally wrong .

Given the "almost" empty is empty on our cars.

Might be that your gauge really is faulty.

You topped it off the 1st time and it barley moved past 1/4 tank is a good indicator to me.

Now its reading correct.
Loose wire somewhere

Since you were amazed that it only took 3 gallons I'll assume you tried topping it off after the pump stopped the first time, but just in case I'll mention this anyway. I don't know the exact physics behind it, but the Fiero tank simply won't take fuel fast. On a fast pump I find that mine backs up the filler neck and trips the pump shutoff well before the tank is full. It's like the air can't get out of the tank fast enough for the incoming fuel. If you didn't press the matter after the pump stopped the first time I would suggest that you just happened on an abnormily fast pump and the system choked.

If that's not the case, just write it off as your car having a bad attitude that day and hope it doesn't happen again.

yup... i guess i should have asked how fast the pump was when you filled up... the tube for our cars that lets out the air in the tank sucks... so... if you don't have the nozzle of the pump out just a little bit it'll stop before it's full.

It's the same gas station I have been using for a while now. It's the same one I used today when I filled up once I got home. I had a few of those Shell Gas Cards from Mypoints.com

I guess it was just a fluke. Maybe I will go out later today and remove the cluster and reset the needle.

Mine does something along those lines but I always fill up at 140miles and I like to think of it as a great theft deturent because my fuel guage will read 3/4 tank and really its almost empty. Go ahead steal my car I will get it towed from where it runs out of gas.

I also track my milage on my tripodometer. If I know the car isn;t taking as much I wil wait 15 seconds and try fulling it again and then bump the car with my hip to dislodge any air pockets in the tank. Generally I estimate within half a gallon of wha thte car takes, it it takes less than that then I'll fill up early.

My range fillup range is currently 250 miles, with a run dry point at about 280. I hope to get my fill-up range over 300 miles by spring.
