I'm trying to figure out what you call the switch directly above the brake light switch on my 87 gt 5sp.
I have linked it to being the reason my stereo and some powerloss when the brake gets hit.(must be a short in switch)
Need to replace but cant figure out what its call.
thanks for any help out their

The only 2 switches i can think of that would be needed on the brake pedal would be for the actual brake lights and one switch to kick off the cruise control.

On page 502 of my 84 Service Manual in the 'ELECTRICAL DIAGNOSIS' section, it calls it

BRAKE SWITCH
WITH CRUISE CONTROL
WITH TCC SIMILAR

and below it is

CRUISE BRAKE
SWITCH
(VACUUM DUMP)
AND CONNECTOR

Of course being an 84 manual they could have changed it later.

I going to go with the cruise cut off switch ,well see if they got a listing for one at my parts house .
Seems odd It has 2 sets of electical connection on switch but only 1 hook up to wires .
I changed out the brake light switch (only 11.00) thinking it ws the proublem and it has 2 connections on switch with 2 sets of wires going to it.
This is a odd proublem,My 88Gt 5sp is starting to have the same proublem .

My 85 2m6 parts car does not have one ,its an automatic.
My 87 gt auto has one and both electrical connection are hook up ,Must be a gear selector switch in the switch.
So it looks like any one from 87 up should work auto or stick .
i dont have a picture ,but it has 2 set of electical connector straight to the back of switch ,The brake light switch has one on the side and one straight to the back.Thats the difference i see.

I have a friend who's a mechanic, and he says the small ground wire that comes off the battery (poor ground) could effect quite a few things or possibly the big ground that goes to the engine block.

Those switches come apart and can be rebuilt. That said, unless I am mistaken (happens once in a while ), I don't think the switch could cause you problem. If the switch, "shorted" completely, your brake lights would be on all the time. I just don't see it being the ultimate cause of the problem; could it be a symptom of bad grounds as mentioned previously?

could it be i only have a bad ground on the battery ,Funny you say that but sometime it would not start and if i mess with the battery ground cable it starts right up.
So i guess if their is a ground proublem ,when i hit the brakes the switch is just to much power to keep things on and their is a quick disconnect(that is while my stereo shut down only at braking).
Sound like a possible

the switch will have both sets of connections used IF you have an auto tranny AND cruise control.
