I have a so/so set of sail windows i want to put on a GT which has completely blown out windows.
I am wondering what the best method is for removing the old, dry, crusted on double-sided tape that is still caked onto the fastback clip and b-pillar. I used a scraper to get the majority and bulk of the remaining tape off, but have found a thin layer that refuses to budge. I can't imagine new tape will stick very well with this still caked on there. I have tried a green scrubber spunge to no avail and am fearfull of using the wrong chemical and damaging the paint.
my other question is what tape should i use for the set i put on. I have heard 3M double-sided tape is the correct tape. but is there a part number for it i.e. a special type of 3M double-sided tape, or will the off the shelf stuff at home depot work? It doesnt look as think in the store as it does on the windows i have removed already.
Also, if there are any tips or tricks someone knows for making this job any easier or more efficient please let me know. maybe a good method for making sure they stick when pressing them on, and aligning them right?

The stock GT sail panels are nearly impossible to remove in one piece. After two decades or so they are so brittle they will crack if you even look at them funny.
As for tape on the new ones. Make sure you have the right kind or your sail panels will fly off on the freeway. Don't ask me how I know that.

Use Goo-Gone for double-sided tape residue removal. Make sure to get the newer type that is a gel. Comes in a gray spray bottle and is available at Wal-Mart. Also, make sure you use a plastic putty knife, not metal. It's slow, tedious work but it will come off after a while. It helps to work the gel in with your fingers and then let it soak in for a while.
As for installation, I recall the better and stronger double-sided tapes (like 3M) say "heavy duty" on the blister pack. I think the size is 1/4" or is it 3/8"?
Lastly, depending on what windows you choose, pay close attention to the curvature of the windows and how they fit on your car! Why? Because in those sections where they do not sit flush you will need to "double-up" on the tape. This will vary of course depending on the thickness of the tape you buy.

I am in the process of removing that old tape too. Goo Gone works wonders if you apply it and let it sit for a minute, it will degrade the sticky stuff and make it easier to get off. I also use a heat gun which helps alot.

Goof Off is what I used. In fact, I'm not sure turpentine wouldn't soften it enough to rub it off with your thumb. Avoid scraping because you'll gouge the plastic surface that the tape needs to be used on. If you don't have a clean, smooth surface, the new tape won't have much to hold on to.
