I did a search of the site and it appears that 88 and later transmissions had a compression fitting dipstick in a smooth bore (my 87 was threaded). The part number given was 24572124 for the GM replacement, can anyone confirme this is correct?
I am guessing my car has a newer getrag in it since I have the smoothbore in my 86...

GM parts direct says it is an indicator (why not call it a dipstick) and that new site that was posted on here lists the same description...

Edit:
My dipstick is just resting in there, it won't seal to the sides of the bore and I don't like that. Since it isn't fitting right, I wonder if it reads the correct level as it may be from another car...

The o-ring fit gets loose with time. Rodney Dickman sells a shim to so that the lever can expand it a bit mor to correct a loose fit.

Or,
find the same diameter washer as the dip stick and cut a slot in it. Slide it under the handle and your good to go.

I like that Rodney's design clips on securely.

The trouble is my dipstick doesn' feel like it is just worn. With it latched (should now be tight) I can tilt it several degrees to the sides or hold it properly aligned and move it side to side, seems to be 1~2 mm of play.

That's exactly what mine did before I stuck the washer in it.
